Venerable Stardust Casino Imploded in Las Vegas to
Make Way for $4.4 Billion Megaresort

By RYAN NAKASHIMA AP Business Writer

LAS VEGAS Mar 13, 2007 (AP)— The venerable Stardust casino-hotel on the
Las Vegas Strip was imploded early Tuesday morning in a hail of fireworks
to make way for Boyd Gaming Corp.'s $4.4 billion megaresort Echelon.

The property, known for its bargain rooms, friendly service and mobbed-up
past, opened on July 2, 1958, billing itself as the world's largest resort
hotel with 1,032 rooms.

The implosion of two towers, gutted to bare concrete and steel over the
past three months, included a 32-story building that was the tallest ever
felled on the Strip.

3. This town has so gone to shit.
I laugh at anybody who comes here as a visitor at this point unless they're here to see family.

5. Las Vegas seems dead set on doing away with its history.
When that asshole Steve Wynn took down the Desert Inn, that was the final straw for me. The Desert Inn was more elegant and had more class than anything Wynn could ever possibly build. Now Las Vegas has that ugly, horrible monstrosity called Wynn's - with the asshole's name emblazoned on the top of the building in neon. :puke:

The citizens of Las Vegas should be outraged that everything built prior to 1995 apparently has no use any longer.

I haven't been to Las Vegas since the Desert Inn closed, and I have no plans for going back anytime soon. So, all of these efforts to attract new people to town are also losing some long time visitors.

It's a shame. A city's history is what makes it interesting to many. Las Vegas is a city without history, unless you want to look at a bunch of pictures. And you can do that online, without even visiting. That's lost revenue for Las vegas.

I know Stardust wasn't owned by Wynn, it was owned by Boyd Gaming, but the destruction must stop. Taking down the Landmark to build a parking lot was inexcusable. It may have been a quirky building, but it had character, and it helped to define Las Vegas. Now it's gone. Along with everything else deemed outdated by someone with more money than brains.

It used to be fun going to Las Vegas. It's not anymore. At least, for me.
