all of Coulter's books would have and should have been flops except for one thing. Her allies on the right bought up massive quantities of her books from the publisher to guarantee her a spot on the NY Times best seller list.

In turn, as a "best seller", she gets time on the talk show circuit to spread their peculiar form of hate.

versed in the workings of those "best seller" lists to answer your question but I believe your correct. I do not think, however, that the leader in the field, the NY Times, makes that distinction on it's list.

I also agree that it would make little to no difference in the opinions of "most people" since "most people" get their information in 30 second sound bites on network or cable news and rarely bother to look further.

They've done it before and they'll do it again. It's all about perception. If people see her book on the NY Times bestseller list they'll believe that most people must think like her or sympathize with her. It won't matter that thousands of cases of her books will be moldering in various warehouses scattered around the country, never to see the light of day. By purchasing all of those books they steer public perception; it's not about people actually reading them.
