Should Election Day be a holiday?
You'd think the "Why do you hate America so much?!" Republicans would support that, but they don't. Why is that?

2. Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes
and again yes. A thousand times yes. We should have 75% voter turnout in this country. There should be a tax break for voting. Free oral sex at the polls. Whatever it takes.

5. No - you don't want undesirable people voting.
Or so the conservative argument usually goes.

7. In Portugal,
the elections are held on a Sunday, so (most) people aren't squeezing voting in on a workday. At least that was the way it was a few years ago.

Why couldn't that work here too?

9. It's not that it couldn't work
because it could. It's just that more people would be able to vote. And we can't have that, can we? :sarcasm:

13. Yes it should be a holiday
And the reason the Repubs don't support it is because a) they want to make it harder for people to vote and b) because it takes people away from working for their mortgages, credit card debt and other predatory lending crap.

14. Not only should it be a holiday -
but it should not just be limited to just one day.

Some employers won't give their employees time off to vote, especially if you have to stand in line for three or four hours.

Most of those polling places that have extended waits, are in districts where minorities and low income families live and work.

They have a hard enough time finding a job, much less being able to take time off from work to go vote. There's a reason why african-american voters were complaining of having to wait hours to vote, while voters in white communities zip right in and out again.

The election should be held over an entire weekend, with voting starting on Friday morning and ending with a national holiday on Monday.

We should be demanding this of our representatives.
Of course it won't happen.
Let's face it, the fact that more people vote for American Idol than in a Presidential election is shameful and is a clear indication of just how SORRY this country has become.

It's not that the country has become SORRY. You made the case for how voting is made difficult for whole swaths of our citizens. If voting for President was made easier you'd see the same kind of numbers voting in our elections.

15. It is absurd that it is not already
The vote is the fundamental franchise, why make it difficult to use?

The answer is obvious, sadly.

20. yes - a midweek day preferably a Wednesday
Edited on Tue Mar-13-07 12:30 PM by goddess40
to prevent people leaving town for a long weekend. Why a Wednesday, because they would have to burn two vacation days to attach it to a weekend.

21. Voter suppression benefits them.
But I also would not support making election day a holiday.

Election day should become Election days and be moved to Saturday and Sunday.

25. Considering the majority of jobs in this country are becoming
service jobs, the service industry doesn't shut down for anything. It would just be a federal paid holiday, that is it.
The people that it would be designed to benefit would see no reward from this law.
