War protesters camp outside Pelosi's Calif. home
More of this will happen...

AP
3/12/07

SAN FRANCISCO - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi brushed past peace activists today who camped outside her home overnight to demand that Congress stop funding the war in Iraq.

The small group confronted Pelosi and asked for a meeting at about 6:30 a.m. as she hurried to a waiting vehicle without stopping to speak. "My home is my home," Pelosi curtly told the protesters before being driven away.

The activists gathered outside the speaker's Pacific Heights home were the remaining few of a group that marched Sunday across the Golden Gate Bridge to meet with the Democrat.

"San Francisco has been against this war from the very beginning," said Toby Blome, 51, a physical therapist from El Cerrito who organized the Sunday event. "This is our fifth year of the war, and Nancy needs to wake up and represent San Franciscans."

Democrats Won't Press Bush On Iran

CBS News
3/13/07

(AP) Democratic leaders are stripping from a military spending bill for the war in Iraq a requirement that President Bush gain approval from Congress before moving against Iran.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and other leaders agreed to remove the requirement concerning Iran after conservative Democrats as well as other lawmakers worried about its possible impact on Israel, officials said Monday.

The overall bill — which requires that the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq by Sept. 1, 2008, if not earlier — remained on schedule for an initial test vote Thursday in the House Appropriations Committee.

The measure provides nearly $100 billion to pay for two wars and includes more money than Mr. Bush had requested for operations in Afghanistan and what Democrats called training and equipment shortages. Still, House Republicans said they wouldn't support it and the White House threatened a veto.

1. Harassing Representatives at their home?
Hell, maybe we should threaten her grandkids - I mean if she's not going to get serious on stopping this illegal and unjust war, isn't she part of the enemy?

There are similarities. I suppose i could cop out and say I think Bush deserves a bit more hassles than Pelosi, but that's probably not right. Have to think about it.

62. You can't be in favor of freedom of speech only
for opinions that you agree with.

Well, you can, but it doesn't reflect favorably on anyone who supports that kind of freedom of speech. I'm not saying that you are, but i think people, even good people, do have a tendency to do exactly that. It does require some discipline to support the right to freedom of expression for people one disagrees with.

20. Oh please. Isn't her job to serve her constituents? She's serving the corporations.
and those who are profiting from this war by time after time after time enabling this Administration.

If Nancy Pelosi won't do the job she's been VOTED IN to do, and honor the consistent pleas of the people of San Francisco and nationwide, then what other choice do they have but to take time out of their own schedule and life and make themselves heard at her home. No doubt they don't want to have to be camping outside her home, but she's apparently not listening anywhere else.

In case you've overlooked the fact, thousands of innocent people have been killed and lives have been ruined for nothing more than to make rich men richer. If it is the richest .0000001 % whom Mrs. Pelosi actually supports, then she simply needs to come out and be honest about it.

Lives ruined? By golly, I didn't know that. It's very hard to get news living in a cave with cotton stuffed in my ears and a blindfold on.

But again, if thousands of people are dead, than why not threaten her Grandkids - i mean if you are willing to take the step of harrassing her at her home, and it is so important, what with thousands dead and all, how far are you willing to go? How far should you be willing to go? What thuggish tactics do thousands of deaths justify?

61. "Thuggish tactics"? Do you think these individuals want to waste their day sitting out in front
of Congressman's Pelosi's house?

You really have nerve in attempting to demonize and marginalize these citizens, when they are giving up their time and their days by trying to protect the troops and the Iraqis who are being killed daily, not to mention they have gone through all the conventional avenues of trying to engage in constructive actions in ceasing the enabling of the Administration.

You speak about thuggish tactics? The actions of these citizens may indeed be embarassing to those public officials who continue to grant power to this presidency, however, to imply "thuggishness" is ridiculous and frankly, insulting.

Have you observed how citizens who are trying to stop the war profiteering through the most Constitutional of methods are being treated, harassed and intimidated? Try observing what is being inflicted on those who care enough to sacrifice their time and their lives by trying to stop this illegal war.

I'm a life long-DEM voter (and plan to stay that way) and I don't take being critical of my own party's leadership lightly, yet sometimes it feels like we are still the minority party.

I don't get Nancy and Co. capitulating so damn easily to Blue Dogs dems and rethugs.

Her mantra going into the 06 election was to limit Shrub's use of executive powers on decisions related to the Iraq war and to change the war's misguided direction.

In both areas, she seems to have NOT walked her pre-election talk. These recent OK's to Shrub do not in any way reflect the majority will of We The People who voted in force last November.

Being protested, getting public notice, this goes with being a public figure, someone representing the public. Of course private property is private, but the public spaces around it are for public use.

The obstruction appears to be bush standing in the middle of a doorway, and the democrats appear to be holding it open for him.

They're too goddamn worried about losing the next election to do what's right ... fine. Let's put the fear of losing the next election into them if they do what's wrong.

If they can't get the job done, holding a majority of the house, let's find us some dems who will get it done.

I don't think the soldiers in Iraq should have to wait for the next election to see how the more strident proposals fare in Congress. We have an opportunity NOW to forge the compromises needed to get this legislative rebuke of Bush on Iraq to his desk.

I don't think they are so worried about the next election as they are in their ability to get anything accomplished in this one.

21. Here
Group protests outside Rove's house
Monday, March 29, 2004 Posted: 10:34 AM EST (1534 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Hundreds rallied Sunday outside the home of Karl Rove, President Bush's chief political adviser, urging legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants who graduate from high school to legalize their status and qualify for in-state college tuition.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/South/03/29/rally.rove/

If I understand this correctly the Pelosi(?) plan would require Bush to certify to Congress on July 1 and again on October 1 that the Iraqi government is making progress in achieving the “benchmarks” that the US president himself laid out in his January speech announcing the escalation of the US intervention. Bush called the situation in Iraq “encouraging” last Tuesday, amid news of horrific bombings that left hundreds of Iraqis dead and attacks that claimed the lives of at least 13 more US soldiers this week. So then why would anyone accept the administration’s word on the supposed progress?

Does the proposed Democratic legislation call for a complete withdrawal of US occupation forces from Iraq under any circumstances?

Would it not leave tens of thousands of American soldiers behind under various pretexts: training Iraqi forces, conducting the “war on terror,” and protecting American facilities, including a massive new embassy?

49. I agree that the certification language is too loose and potentially enabling.
Congress needs to certify where they think the occupation is going, not wait for Bush to lie to them. I think the Senate can and will take care of this as there will be more opportunities to amend the bill on the Senate floor instead of in the restrictive committee process in the House. There should be several amendments from the folks in the Senate who we would expect to provide reason and commitment to the effort.

The rally was the most recent "occupation" activists have staged in lawmakers' home communities and offices in recent weeks. Democrat U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel's office in Chicago was targeted on Thursday, and peace activists dressed in pink showed up recently at the Senate offices of presidential hopefuls Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.

41. Holding a majority means taking responsibility for the mess we're in.
If you all weren't ready for it, then you are naive beyond belief.

42. "Democrats Won't Press Bush On Iran"!" Haven't we learned our @$% lesson!
I'm furious. Bush pulled the "we need authority to hold over Saddam's head" shit in 2002. And we as a party are going down that road with this lunatic again?!

I'm beyond words.

51. From beyond words...
Edited on Tue Mar-13-07 01:18 PM by RiverStone
To taking our words directly to the folks that represent us!

I'm furious too mzmolly; and yet, I hold out hope that our party will find its bearing.

I recently called Sen. Patty Murry's office (she is one of my Senators from WA state) and expressed concern to her aid that she was NOT supporting recent legislation in our State House which would officially recommend Impeachment proceedings for Shrub. The vote would be symbolic in measure, yet a statement of affirmation.

The aid said Patty was opposed to the impeachment resolution because it would distract the DEMS from moving forward on more important and achievable goals (in Congress). Of course, I disagreed and spoke to how even symbolically holding Shrub accountable for crimes against humanity in Iraq spoke volumes to the whole world that we all do NOT support this insane war. We had quite the debate and she said would pass along my concerns and comments to Patty - so I hope.

Peaceful protesting and voicing concerns directly to our reps is the ONLY way I have yet found to chill my anger - ok - meditation and exercise helps too!

I hope you can convert your anger to action and stay with us - I hope we can change the party from within.

peace:)

Good for them!

Outside Nancy Pelosi’s home, an antiwar encampment features a big papier-mâché statue of Gandhi. Protesters say they will remain there until a coming Congressional vote on supplemental Iraq war financing.

68. They need to be protesting outside the homes and businesses of the real culprits
the corporate backers that have stolen our government and national assets in a hostile takeover.
There IS NO MORE REPRESENTATION! Stop the fantasy NOW. We are wasting valuable time.
