Kansas (Christian) teacher accused of lesbian relationship with student
Southeast Kansas teacher accused of sex with student
The Associated Press

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. | A teacher at a Christian school in southeast Kansas has been charged with having sex with a 14-year-old girl who was her student, authorities said.

Marsha J. Mote, 37, of Tyro, turned herself in today and made an initial appearance in Montgomery County District Court on a charge of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. She was released on $20,000 bond.

Mote was a teacher at Tyro Community Christian School. Her husband, Kevin, is associate pastor at Tyro Christian Church and has taken a leave of absence because of the allegations.

Before being charged, Mote resigned her position as teacher. She also has stopped participating in church youth volunteer programs.

6. Well now. . .up until about a year ago. . .in Georgia
if the 37 year old had been a man and the 14 year old had been a girl who became pregnant, they could have married without knowledge or permission of the parents.

It's another one of those morally proper laws that were overlooked while the fundies campaigned to get the constitutional-amendment-to-protect-the-sanctity-of-marriage-against-the-gay-menace passed.
Of course, it was the state's only LESBIAN legislator who came forward to sponsor the repeal of the rob-the-cradle marriage law.

3. She should have resigned.
and charges should be brought. Nothing to do with the genders of the parties or the *Christian School* employment. But everything to do with an adult in an authority position becoming involved with a minor under that authority.

Way back in h.s. I was a cheerleader. One of the two biology teachers was a real creep whenever we were in uniform. Very inappropriate comments about how we looked in uniforms. Even though I had the other biology teacher - I wasn't immune to his inappropriate and very uncomfortable comments made in the hallway (from the teacher/wrestling coach) during passing periods. But he brought state championships to the school (wrestling) so all complaints were ignored.

A couple of years after I graduated - he was caught in a sexual moment with a student in the wrestling laundry room. When caught he was essentially run out of town on a rail. But the years of complaints from girls (esp cheerleaders in uniforms) were ignored. Suddenly all of us who had been subject to the comments - reallized that the comments were not just inappropriate - but attempting to find which girls were so insecure as to find his comments flattering rather than uncomfortable (that is - those girls who had lower self-esteem - b/c not only did he have authority - but in realtiy and retrospect he was both an attractive older man - and due to all of the state championships a sort of local hero) he was actually trying to pinpoint which girls were vulnerable. Very predatory behavior.

All that said to state that this strikes me as the same sort of thing.

8. It shouldn't; sexual orientation has nothing to do with proper or improper sexual behavior

11. Why did you put "lesbian relationship" in the subject line?
A lesbian relationship is a relationship between two consenting adults. That is not the situation described in the article.

12. That is interesting.
The article uses "accused of having sex with student".

14. Sorry I guess I should have called it something else
I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone. I guess I should have called this woman a pedophile.

I've read enough of your other posts to realize you weren't being intentionally offensive. :)

but the article title just doesn't seem to do the article justice.

18. Maybe she and Ted Haggard can get together?
On a (slightly) more serious note, though, this is what comes when a person isn't allowed to be himself or herself, and the perceived stigma of not conforming to the heterosexual norm overcomes one's innate, natural self. It's a losing battle, and kills a person's soul little by little every single day. Until it finally gets to the point where a person indulges the most self-destructive behavior they can think of, and now this woman's career is ruined, her marriage and family will almost surely disintegrate, the young woman she molested will be stigmatized, and her life is generally a shambles.

How much different might this 37-year-old's life be if she could have been honest with herself and with the community around her when her sexual nature became clear to her? And how much better it might have been for all concerned to accept a characteristic as innate and unchangeable as a person's eye color or laugh?

17. It would be interesting to follow this case:
TO see if they will keep the perspective focused on the fact this woman is a pedophile who used her position of authority to prey on a student, or if the fact it was an adult female and a female student will be used as fodder for the "evils of homosexuality" crowd. I'll bet I can guess which portrayal the right wingers will take.
