Lousiana lawmaker advocates eugenics: Sterilize poor women, encourage rich to procreate.»

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that state Rep. John LaBruzzo (R) said yesterday that “he is studying a plan to pay poor women $1,000 to have their Fallopian tubes tied.” LaBruzzo worries that people receiving food and housing assistance “are reproducing at a faster rate than more affluent, better-educated residents”:

He said he is gathering statistics now. … “What I’m really studying is any and all possibilities that we can reduce the number of people that are going from generational welfare to generational welfare,” he said.

He said his program would be voluntary. It could involve tubal ligation, encouraging other forms of birth control or, to avoid charges of gender discrimination, vasectomies for men. It also could include tax incentives for college-educated, higher-income people to have more children, he said.

LaBruzzo said that mainstream strategies against poverty, such as education and family planning, “have repeatedly failed to solve the problem,” according to the Times-Picayune. “I don’t know if it’s a viable option…Of course people are going to get excited about it,” he said of his plan.

Update: LaBruzzo's district is the same one that sent white supremacist and former leader of the KKK David Duke to the state legislature in 1989.

1. David Duke always used to talk about a "black population welfare bomb"
And this sounds like something right out of his platform.

12. This isn't a new idea. I was offered about the same deal in the mid 70s
hear in California when I applied for food stamps as a college student with a baby. The good old days return! :sarcasm:

Hard to believe we're in the 21st century; doesn't feel like it.

15. Do you remember that college students used to be eligible for food stamps?
Well, that went by the wayside so, I had to go into a Social Services office to apply. I was a fulltime student, worked fulltime and had an infant.

I was asked if I'd consider sterilization and the slimeball proceeded to give me his version of my baby's conception -- was I drunk at a party and so on, lovely -- before he'd process my application. It seemed to be SOP, not anything he was doing on his own.

You can do pretty much anything you want to poor people who need your help, I guess.

19. And the really creepy part is the guy hit on me, into the bargain.
Too bad time travel is still impossible. It would be nice to go back and punch him in the nose for taking advantage of 19 year old. lol

This idea must be very old, though. It's just the same old dehumanizing of powerless people -- the idea that you can change their bodies and move them around like checkers and get rid of them or replace them if you should need to.

16. No, this would have been in the early days of Ford,
shortly after Nixon resigned. My baby was born in July, 1974 so maybe this was the Fall right after that.
