"I didn't become attorney general by quitting," Gonzales told CBS' The Early Show. "Obviously, my job is easier if I have the confidence of Congress."

Gonzales defended the White House's role in the firings saying, "Of course they'd be involved. These are political appointees."

Democrats clamored for Gonzales' to resign. Republicans also said they were outraged at being misled over the circumstances of the firings. GOP Rep. James Sensenbrenner, a Judiciary Committee member, said the situation could cause Gonzales to "die by a thousand cuts."

An open admission that Justice Dept has been politicized...Democrats can not now ever receive a fair and impartial trial direct from the mouth of the Attorney General...Just because they are appointed by the President of the USA does not mean they are political appointments....They are Prosecutors for Christ's sake. Their job should be as far from politics as any person in America...

6. We sure got off "I didn't know anything" fast, didn't we?

Just yesterday Mr. Gonzales was saying that he'd been totally in the dark about this whole thing, and he was just as surprised as the beat reporters that such a thing could occur. Today, he's acknowledging that corruption plays a natural and inevitable role in everything this administration does, and anyone who hasn't figured that out by now is pretty naive.

You can almost see him lean up against the door jamb, hands in his pockets as he shifts the toothpick from one side of his mouth to the other, and says, "So what are you gonna do about, huh?"
