MEXICO CITY (AFP) - US President George W. Bush ended his Latin American tour Wednesday as it began, marred by violent protests after demonstrators rioted outside the US embassy here.
A group of masked protesters threw bottles, rocks and paint at the police guarding a peaceful march, leaving more than 20, including 11 officers, injured.
Hundreds of students, unionists, environmentalists and other progressives chanted anti-Bush and read screeds against the United States in front of the embassy as they marched from the center of town to the legislature.
But the demonstration was broken up after violence erupted. Riot police, hit with a hail storm of rocks, fired tear gas and charged the last 300 diehard rioters, knocking several to the ground.
Bush was to leave Mexico Wednesday after a summit with his counterpart Felipe Calderon in the tourist town of Merida, where protesters attacked the town hall as the two leaders dined with some of the country's richest men.
