Why can't democrats elect a mayor in NYC?
is it that we don't ever get very good candidates or what? Just curious. It's been a long time since there was a Dem mayor in a highly democratic city. And yes, I know that Bloomberg is a former Democrat.

1. Rudy slipped in for a couple terms and did the Disneyfication of Times
Square thing, and Bloomberg barely defeated Mark Green in the next race after Giuliani, then coasted to a strong win for his second term.

No conservative Republican can be elected there -- both Giuliani and Bloomberg had to have far more liberal positions to be elected than Republicans would almost anyplace else in the country.

And I think next time a Democrat will take it by a wide margin.

2. Glad you think so, Old Crusoe
Bloomberg is more liberal than Guiliani, I believe? He's been between both parties.

3. Yep. I was hoping Mark Green would pull that one out with Bloomberg.
Didn't happen.

We'll git 'em next time.

4. Isn't Bloomberg a Dem who switched over to the GOP
so that he could run for mayor?

6. As Jon Stewart said:
Only in a city like NY can someone like Bloomberg be a Republican. Any where else he'd be a gay communist!

5. The last two mayors (Guliani & Bloomberg) were democrats...
...they just changed parties to run. A "real" republican would never win in nyc.

7. still why can't we elect someone who actually runs as a democrat?
why did they feel they had to change their party id to run for Mayor of a heavily democratic city?

8. Bloomberg had megabucks and beat...
...Mark Green by using 9/11 as a scare tactic and Guliani won not because he was a republican but because he broke up the mob when he was attorney general.

They changed parties, I believe, because they didn't have the party support - they were not the heir apparent so they gamed the system.

9. so are you saying the NYC Dems tried to strongarm out popular candidates...
and ended up getting Republicans elected as a result?

That speaks very poorly of party leadership, if true.

11. It's partly that...
...and partly the Republicans recruiting the likes of Guliani and Bloomberg because they were not politically active before and didn't rise through the ranks of the democratic party.

10. Because the last Dem was a disaster for this city,

and Rudy's victory perfectly coincided so he could ride the wave of nationwide crime reduction at the same time he took EFFECTIVE steps in bringing down NYCs. - i.e. actually penalizing CRIMINALS.

12. Part of the reason is the
constant infighting with factions within the Democratic party in NYC. It's about the power and each faction wants their control. This lets the liberal type R's get in office.

14. Also, Al Sharpton usually intervenes at the last minute, and pushes...
for the most conservative of the bunch, to repay Roger Stone and his ilk.
