Does Bush Resemble Leonidas or Xerxes?

Bloody Blockbuster '300' Ignites Debate Over Its Parallels to Current Events in the Middle East

March 14, 2007 — The leader of the most powerful empire in the world invades a small country to avenge his father's failure to do so years ago. His army is relentlessly attacked by a proud group of insurgents who denounce the empire's decadence.

The leader of a brave fighting force vows to defend freedom at all costs against an enemy from the Middle East. To rally his troops, he makes a speech, declaring, "The world will know that free men stood against a tyrant."

Is one of them President Bush?

Cash's in on war? You know some one that stays out of harms way and sends people to die, for the Corporations of Sparta.

7. Who the heck builds a limo like that?
Limos are obscene when the are the standard length. That one is absolutely phallic.

16. I've always thought that.
He certainly espouses Alfred E. Neuman's motto.

"What me worry?"

5. The nancy boy with all the piercings
I haven't seen the film but from the excerpts I've seen, that character looks just about as dismissive and imperial as the Squatter-In-Chief.

10. Have they made a movie about Varus & the Teutonberg Forest?
Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 03:46 PM by NewJeffCT
Bush certainly reminds me a bit of Varus:

1) Came from a wealthy conservative family
2) Became governor of the wealthy province of Syria, left Syria poor, but made out like a bandit himself.
3) Moved to Germany, where he befriended Arminius, a German. Arminius led Varus and 3 full Roman legions into a trap in terrain where they were unused to fighting. The 3 full legions were annihilated because of Varus' stupidity and Arminius' trickery in what may have been Rome's worst defeat in their long history - probably worse than Hannibal beating them at Cannae because the Romans eventually conquered Carthage, while they never again attempted to extend their borders further into Germania.

I was reading something a while back on some of the great battles of ancient Rome and then read a bit more about Varus & it struck me that he sounded a bit like Bush... However, I think Varus ended up committing suicide as his legions were being destroyed by the Germans.

17. Not every movie is about current day politics
This movie was based on a graphic novel not Bush, US, Iraq or Modern day Iran. I loved the movie and just don't get all the politico analyst of this particular movie.

20. writer misuses the word "insurgents"
Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 04:28 PM by 0rganism
An insurgency typically connotes revolt against an established internal regime, and differs thusly from a resistance which stands against an invading external force or an army of occupation and its collaborators. Xerxes' Persian army was clearly arriving as an invading force, not the military of an established domestic government. I think there's also a connotation of assymetrical, guerilla warfare in both terms -- while Leonidas' operation may have been assymetrical in numbers at least, it could hardly be considered covert.

Seems to me, it's kind of off-the-mark to refer to King Leonidas' stand at Thermopylae as either resistance or insurgency, as it was strategically a joint operation with Themistocles' naval forces. Not all defensive wars are well-described as "resistances", IMHO.

21. I see all these threads about "300," and I just wanna know one thing...
...does the film give its viewers any inkling of the fact that cross-generational homoerotic bonding was a central feature of Spartan military culture?

So far I haven't seen it come up, so I assume they heterosexed everybody up for the film.

C ya,

The Plaid Adder
