WASHINGTON - A liberal watchdog group published on its Web site Monday a picture of President Bush and imprisoned lobbyist Jack Abramoff, the kind of photo the White House has refused to release.

Kim Eisler, Washingtonian magazine writer and a friend of Abramoff's, confirmed the photo's authenticity for The Associated Press. He said he had seen the picture at Abramoff's house.

Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 03:41 PM by LSparkle
Rethugs dragged EVERYONE in to testify in Whitewater -- it didn't matter who they were, how close they were to Clinton -- now it's PAYBACK TIME. KKKarl isn't going to be able to wiggle his fat, greasy ass out of this one ... but it's gonna be fun to watch him try!

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

On edit: I don't know whether this would affect him being called to testify, but they should have stuck him over at the RNC as a political person, NOT ON THE PUBLIC PAYROLL, long ago ... and may regret it now.

47. Can Rove even claim Executive Privilege? Here's the C-Span
definition:

EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE refers to the assertion made by the President or other executive branch officials when they refuse to give Congress, the courts, or private parties information or records which have been requested or subpoenaed, or when they order government witnesses not to testify before Congress.
The assertion is based on the constitutional doctrine of separation of powers, is always controversial, subject to interpretation, and often litigated.

http://www.c-span.org/guide/congress/glossary/exprivilege.htm

Would Rove's position of Deputy Chief of Staff I believe that is his title) qualify as an executive branch official?

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/03/14/rove-attorneys-testify/

<snip>
Of course the White House doesn’t want Karl Rove to testify. Just last month, a top Justice Department official told Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in a letter that the “Department is not aware of Karl Rove playing any role in the decision to appoint Griffin” as U.S. Attorney in Arkansas. Now the White House acknowledges that Rove “served as a conduit for complaints about federal prosecutors.” In emails released yesterday, former Gonzales aide Kyle Sampson writes, “I know that getting appointed was important to Harriet, Karl, et cetera.” When a GOP chairman in New Mexico complained about a U.S. Attorney, Rove reportedly told him, “He’s gone.” And news reports indicate that Rove’s office may have been involved in problems involving the U.S. Attorney from Washington state, John McKay.

Thankfully, Senate Judiciary Chairman Pat Leahy (D-VA) isn’t backing down. Last night on PBS, Leahy referred to Tim Griffen as Rove’s “acolyte,” and said he will “insist” that senior White House officials testify “in public, in sworn testimony, under oath“:

I intend to bring the attorney general up here. I am requesting several other people to come up here, certainly Mr. Sampson, Ms. Miers, I assume eventually Karl Rove. If they don’t come, then I’ll seek to subpoena them up here, because the story changes almost every time we pick up the newspaper. <…>

What I want to find out is what happened, why we’ve been given different stories. And I want those answers, not in an informal briefing; I want those answers in public, in sworn testimony, under oath before my committee. As chairman, that’s what I insist.

Some GOP shill clown is on now and tried to say "Bill Clinton did it first!" but Wolfie shut him down quick, and called bullshit, says that's NOT what Clinton did. Mr. Shill just fumbled and stumbled and said "Yeah but...yeah but..." and Wolfie wouldn't let him do it.

I know Wolf is a soul-less, spineless Bush fan, and is only doing this because he's finally discovered he's on the wrong side of this one, but it was still fun to watch.

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/03/14/rove-attorneys-testify/

During a press briefing yesterday, presidential counselor Dan Bartlett signaled that the White House will fight congressional efforts to have Karl Rove testify about his role in the U.S. Attorney purge:

"I find it highly unlikely that a member of the White House staff would testify publicly to these matters, but that doesn’t mean we won’t find other ways to try to share that information."

Press Secretary Tony Snow was also resistant:

"Well, as you know, Ed, it has been traditional in all White Houses not to have staffers testify on Capitol Hill. So I think what we have been trying to do is to work in a way to be as forthcoming with members of Congress — you saw all the emails coming out today — give them all the information so that they can make a fair judgment about it."

Press Coverage

Libby, Rove, Cheney also face spy lawsuit
By James Gordon Meek, New York Daily News

February 25, 2007

While a jury deliberates Lewis (Scooter) Libby's fate on perjury charges this week, he and former boss Vice President Cheney, in a quiet corner of the same courthouse, are fighting a lawsuit that could cost them both a lot of money. Libby has spent the past four weeks fighting to stay out of jail for allegedly lying about his role in outing CIA spy Valerie Plame to reporters in 2003.

At the same time, Plame and her husband, ex-Ambassador Joseph Wilson, want Libby, Cheney, President Bush's political guru Karl Rove and former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage to pay cash for the alleged harm they caused with the notorious leak.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of the Wilsons by liberal watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, alleges the Bush gang exposed Plame as a covert CIA operative to discredit her husband after he debunked the President's prewar claim that Iraq was buying uranium in Africa.

The suit accuses the officials of covering up their involvement in a "rogue action" that put the Wilson family in danger, chilled their right to freedom of speech and ruined Plame's CIA career.

64. They're having a conniption over at The Site Not Worthy of Mention
They love me sooo much over there! None of them can believe it, because I posted it. One of them actually posted a transcript of Judy Woodmuff's interview with Leahy from LAST NIGHT, wherein Leahy said he'd even consider calling Rove, but they dismissed that, too, as being "a long way from a subpeona. They just completely ignore the source which I mention in my OP, Leahy himself on Blitzer's show this afternoon. No "maybe" or "I'll consider it." He said he was going to subpeona Rove, period.

They're in total denial...they can't accept it. There's a lot of heavy drinking going on over there right now!

if only someone could talk Olbermann into mentioning on a nightly basis how many days oversight has been re-instated after being abolished for 4000 odd days by the Repukes.

86. "MAY" or "WILL" ???? there's a big difference
I haven't seen a story that says emphatically that Rove will be subpoena'd.

and as we've seen, when they say they "may" do something, it's a far cry from it actually happening.

not trying to be skeptical. just been through the ringer on these types of things before.

IIRC, there were actually several charges, including the bombing of Cambodia and income tax evasion.

You are probably referring to his refusal to turn over the tapes he made in his office. He was charged with obstruction, but that was based on the content of the last tape he turned over, not his refusal to provide it. The tape contained a conversation in which he directed the CIA to obstruct an FBI investigation into the Watergate burglary.

Oops:

Upon further review, I think you are correct. According to Article 3 he was charged with not complying with subpoenas.
