By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Banana company Chiquita Brands International was charged Wednesday with doing business with a terrorist organization.

Federal prosecutors said the company and several unnamed high-ranking corporate officers did business with the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia. The group is described in court documents as a violent right-wing organization that the U.S. has designated as a terrorist organization.

9. Chiquita Brands International IS a Terrorist organization
Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 03:55 PM by ProudDad
Their old name was United Fruit Company -- ring any bells?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiquita_Brands_International

"Chiquita Brands International Inc. was formed in 1871 by U.S. railroad entrepreneur Henry Meiggs as the United Fruit Company. In 1970 it became the United Brands Company. And in 1985 it became Chiquita Brands International."

Always trying to hide their tracks...

"On May 3, 1998, The Cincinnati Enquirer published an eighteen-page section, "Chiquita Secrets Revealed" on Chiquita. The articles, written by Enquirer investigative reporters Michael Gallagher and Cameron McWhirter, charged the company with mistreating the workers on its Central American plantations, polluting the environment, allowing cocaine to be brought to the United States on its ships, bribing foreign officials, evading foreign nations' laws on land ownership, forcibly preventing its workers from unionizing, and a host of other misdeeds."

Not to mention their above ground degradations...

"In 1954, the Guatemalan government of Colonel Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán was toppled by a group of Guatemalan army officers who invaded from Honduras with the covert assistance of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (see Operation PBSUCCESS). Before that, the directors of UFCO had lobbied to convince the Truman and Eisenhower administrations that Colonel Arbenz intended to align Guatemala with the Soviet bloc. Besides the disputed issue of Arbenz's allegiance to Communism, the directors of UFCO may have feared Arbenz's stated intention of purchasing uncultivated land from the company (at the value declared in tax returns) and redistributing it among Native American peasants."

They were mainly responsible for the long night of right-wing military dictatorships in Guatamala, etc.

14. These guys are real bad news. Central America is still poor and reeling
from all the damage caused by United Fruit.

It is a shame people here discount this with laughter because the terrible awful putrid company sells bananas.

He also had some rather bizarre political beliefs... I have no doubt of where those beliefs came from.... Chiquita Banana's parent company, the infamous United Fruit Company.
