gwb43.com ???
Notice that several of the "purge" emails came from this domain rather than whitehouse.gov? Looks like some of the White House staff is using a non .gov email service to escape discovery - it is "owned" by the RNC. Looks like this service is hosted by SMARTech Corp.

Looks like they'd login from this site or something similar to it:

http://mail.smartechcorp.net/webmail/index.pl

Here's an article I found on
http://www.smartechcorp.net/index.php?page=news&sub=story&id=68

Now if we had a mole within SmarTech corp who has access to the backup tapes... :-)

1. I think perhaps someone should have Mr. Leahy ask WHY they
are using an email server FUNDED by the RNC.

After all, if they are doing government business, shouldn't they be using a government server?

17. Not necessarily
Whether or not there are backups depends on a number of factors.

For instance, I get my mail from a POP account on a hosted server. I have my mail client set up to check for new mail every 5 minutes, download new messages, and delete downloaded messages from the server. My mail client is nearly always running, so when it is any email would sit on the server for a maximum of 5 minutes. Obviously, only what's on the server at the time of the backup (most likely done nightly) will ever make it into the backup. This would mean only the tiniest percentage of my mail has ever been backed up by my hosting company. If you really want to see what's in my email, you'll need my computer. And if I had something incriminating on it and it looked like it could be exposed, I'd wipe my hard disks clean.

Of course there's companies who specialize in data restoration who can get at data even after it's been overwritten multiple times...

But if they're using web-based mail (which they would be stupid to do and therefore probably were) then yes, it all stayed on the server unless they specifically deleted it (which most people don't do because they want a record for their own purposes). In that case, it was most likely all backed up.

25. I agree with your correction.
Somewhere it is probable that in the case here, where a combination of government and private networks are involved, that at some point an automatic backup occurred.

Thanks for the correction, I'll qualify in the future that it is possible or probable that backups exist somewhere.

In fact, the only SURE way to prevent data recovery from hard drives is to physically destroy the platters.

docs that you linked. It is quite incredible that they openly discussed internal personnel matters of the AG's office on unsecured non-gov email system.

It is equally astounding that personnel matters are at the least being coordinated with political hacks.

Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 04:59 PM by RobertSeattle
In example, if you go to this pdf:
http://judiciary.house.gov/media/pdfs/DOJdocsPt1070313.pdf

and the go to page 16 - you can easily read whatever is highlighted or redacted. Of course, redacted text is always the juicy stuff!

20. Check me if I'm wrong...
I seem to remember KKKarl using a similar trick more than once in his illustrious career. IIRC, once was when his office was 'allegedly' bugged during the little idiot's gubernatorial campaign. There were emails of questionable origin then too, I believe.

That said, I could be wrong about that being the particular incident, but my point is, we've played this game before.

Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 05:58 PM by POAS
In the previous case Rove "Bugged" his own office. Had it "discovered" and then blamed it on the Dems.

Here however we have internal communications with NO link to Democratic sources. What is within these hundred(s) of pages are the planning of the AG purge from beginning to end.

Certainly there is much more to discover that is NOT contained here but there are many trails to follow here.

I'm sure the Judiciary committe staff are hard on the trail and good net-roots like Josh Marshall will keep us all aware and hopefully active!

29. Help me out understanding these document releases...
As secretive as this bunch is, why exactly did they release this stuff? Did media request it or is it some kind of FOIA thing or what? It seeems tthat they might want to have some sort of "server failure" or something. Especially since it appears that they were using non-government servers and such. I mean what's the point if they just release these documents anyway?

32. Here's my thinking
I think Smartech is more of an outsource/enterprise-type deal. No doubt, the domain is indeed registered to the RNC but it's not hosted on the RNC server. My guess is that gwb43.com is strictly an email server and that the RNC is outsourcing that to Smartech.

Maybe tomorrow, I'll call up Smartech and just plain ask them about that domain.

You know what I always find interesting when I do a reverse IP lookup on the RNC server? All the interesting domains that are there and when typed in a browser, always redirect to the main GOP site. Here's just a few of the 123 domain names registered to the RNC:

flippercam.com
iamaliberal.com
johnkerryliberalrecord.com
kerryliberalrecord.com
mytaxrefund.org
republicrooks.com
your-congress.com
youthforbush.com

Here's the way cool part, since I last did a reverse IP lookup for the RNC, they've added a new domain and oh...it's a doozy

Wait for it

www.barackosama2008.org

Go on. Give it a try. Type it in the address bar of your browser. See what happens...:)

Apparently Smartech is handling all the RNC server stuff. Probably the RNC has their server housed at Smartech. I'm still guessing the gwb43 domain was used for email and was probably never turned into a site.

Off the smartech site here's a news piece about them hosting all the GOP sites:

http://www.smartechcorp.net/index.php?page=news&sub=story&id=68

The owner's name is Jeff Averbeck and here's his political donations according to newsmeat:

http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_detail.php?city=Chattanooga&st=TN&last=Averbeck&first=Jeff

Averbeck donated over $2300.00 to the RNC in the past four years.
