Tracing source of women's hate for Palin

Mary Schmich

September 28, 2008

A woman I like and respect spotted me in a coffeehouse a few days ago and sat down at my table. Her first words, after she noticed my laptop, were: "I hope you're writing about Sarah Palin. Isn't she awful?"

She shuddered—literally, her body shook—and said she hated Palin.

At its most logical, the hatred many women profess for Palin is rooted in the feeling that she has ascended to power she hasn't earned and that she could turn that power against the beliefs and best interests of most women.

2. Palin represents that woman to all hard working women who
have earned their keep and risen through the ranks. I have worked with several women like that in my work history and they use their flirtation, lies and whatever else they can do move through the ranks even though they are not qualified.

Palin is that woman...we haven't seen the real anger yet from working women...it's just beginning.

3. I've had several women tell me they are having nightmares about Palin
They though McCain was bad enough but Palin is worse than they could have imagined. And these are highly educated women - doctorate level college professors. Since McCain selected Palin many of the women who had supported Hillary have come out for Obama and are canvassing with a vengeance. The idea that a woman so against what they fought for all these years would be so close to the Presidency makes them feel physically ill.

I am a man, and I would have trouble respecting any woman who didn't. I have trouble with any repub...they all make my skin crawl and I cannot listen to them for a second.

18. Agreed but this is the second article I've read through DU that
at the end either feels sorry for her and blame men for MAKING her think that she's ready. I don't understand why these women are shifting the blame, like she had a gun to her head. She's not qualified and from her policies, incredibly ruthless; so to me, she seems to know exactly she wants.

exploits her children, and beauty queens make me sick, pretentious phonies, ignorant sluts who allow themselves to be exploited. So yeah I hate her, I think she sucks ass and is dumber than a gold fish, and I happen to like goldfish. :D

11. I've totally dismissed her, but when I hear the news of her interviews, I
shudder and truly feel sorry for her. The only thing she can do now is learn some humility. My personal hope is that she will wake up and learn that she is being made into a joke. She's obviously given her permission. If not, it's hard not to have to pity her.

12. Can't stand her. Hate her. Watching her perform her bitchy, sneering, caustic
convention speech, watching her shaking hands with important leaders she has never thought of--or heard of--until a couple weeks ago, watching her try to skate through interviews on talking points and cliches like it's the Miss Alaska competition--ugh. Hate--yes, that's what it is.

13. She is Pro-Life and she is OK with killing....
animals from the air.Thats rather gruesome. Sorry all women out there, but I think this is the truth! Most women like choice and don't like bloody dead animals.

17. I don't think she has the brains to be caustic-- that takes a little
grey matter...

She comes across as a dimwit and an airhead-- no doubt about it (IMO) :)

14. I thought you were talking about Hillary...
Ms. Clinton just seems to draw that same visceral feeling in some women. My semi-fundie SIL is generally as mild as milk, but in 2000 she just spit out "I could just smack her!" I tried to talk to her, but she could barely verbalize about why she hated Hillary.

I think we just see Clinton and Palin as archetypes of what we like or hate in women. Those of us who admire competent women see Palin as a dangerously stupid Stepford wife, and those of us who like hollow women with a veneer of attractiveness see women like Clinton as threatening and castrating.

Now, I personally like uppity women, but lots of people don't. They usually vote Repub.

21. I don't hate her at all.
I think she's a cretinous lunatic with a terrible accent and a "Ready for Rapture" complex, but I don't hate her.

I don't get quotes like this from the article:

"Her weak week was enough to make at least a few people recognize that the real bad guys were the folks who seduced her for their political gain into thinking she was ready."

Why would anyone feel that she was "seduced" into becoming VP? This woman is a freaking GOVERNOR, why are folks acting like she was a homely virgin being asked out by the hot HS quarterback? This womas has FIVE CHILDREN. She cannot possibly be unacquainted with making tough and/or thoughtful decisions. The idea that poor little Miss Sarah was coerced, lulled or seduced into accepting the 2nd highest position in the entire country is a bunch of crap.

If anyone has to feel sorry for her, feel sorry that she's as dumb as a barbell. Not for accepting a position she knew damn well she wasn't qualified for.
