Today, I convinced my fundie mom that her church should see "An Inconvenient Truth"
(Disclaimer: Her church is fundie, but not RABID fundie.
Mom is a member in good standing even though she often
THINKS about the things she hears and reads, lol.
)

Talking to her today, she mentioned that a lot of
folks had been talking about it at her church, but none
of them knew anyone who had seen it. (This is a small
church in a small town in VERY CONSERVATIVE rural PA)

So, I tried to encourage her to see it without sounding
too much like a radical liberal-type. (Something I automatically
try to avoid with mom anyway.)

I told her that Al was careful to avoid ANY questionable
positions, and only presented the most well-proven science.

And I admitted that I had initially shared one of her fears:
"Al Gore presenting a slide show? How could THAT be a good movie? LOL",
but that I had been surprised by how engaging and entertaining
it actually was.

So, by the time we were done talking, she had decided that
she not only wanted to see it, but that she should try to have
a public screening at the church itself!
Honestly, I think they're really proud of the new Rec building
they just built, and are happy for almost any excuse to invite
people into it. But hey, whatever works, right? Just getting
Conservatives to WATCH it is the difficult part, IMHO.

You know, I'm 38, and Mom can still REALLY surprise me sometimes.
Today was a GOOD surprise, Itellyawhut!

BTW, does anyone know if that kind of thing would qualify
to get a free copy of the DVD? I know it's easy to get one
for a school, but I'm not sure if other types of organizations
qualify or not. If I can point her to a free copy, that would
just be icing on the cake.

2. Here, try this freebie site
http://sharethetruth.us/free/

I've never understood why religion and environmentalism are assumed to be mutually exclusive. Many faiths make reference to taking care of the earth and its creatures.

6. That's one of the points that I mentioned with Mom today.
That the God in the Bible assigned us to be "caretakers"
of the Earth. And she agreed that we have generally done
a very poor job of it.

THANKS for that link! I know I used to have it somewhere,
but my bookmarks are a bigger mess than is worth wading
through these days. I'm gonna eMail that to her right now!

5. Check your local Library, Most Libraries now have huge DVD...
and Video Collections, or they can get them from libraries with which they share resources. Hope Mom enjoys the flick.

8. Back when "Farenheit 9/11" came out,
I convinced my oldest son and his friends (big bubbas) to see it even they had declared it was propaganda without seeing it. I told them that when everyone is telling you NOT to see something, you'd damn well better see it and make up your own mind...for why are they trying to control what you see? I took all of them to the movie and paid their way in, because they didn't want to "give Michael Moore" any money. After the movie, when we walked outside, each one of them pulled out money and gave me my money back.

It all goes to "who controls what you think?" or do you think for yourself? Always read the books people tell you not to read, see the movies people tell you not to see, and listen to the people who people tell you aren't worth listening to....then decide for yourself, or else you are letting people control what you do/see/think.

10. Not everyone puts that in her "plus" column, you know!

I only get to hug her once a year these days, when she comes
down on vacation. Days like today make me really regret that.
I really wanted to give her a great big one.

13. Just cough up the money for a rental yourself.
I'm sure the producers will not sue you for purposes like this.

As long as you aren't charging admission!

17. If necessary, I certainly will. (Assuming anyone rents it around there- NOT a given!)
Actually, I'd BUY her a copy here and mail it up,
so she can keep it on hand permanently.

14. Oh dang it!
Now I have to adjust to the news that there are good, balanced and rational fundies in the world? It's just too hard I tells ya. :-)

Bless your mom and her congregation for wanting to look at this thing head-on.

16. If it makes this any easier for ya....
...they don't actually use the word "fundamentalist" much.
They more often refer to themselves as a "bible-believing" church.

Yes, I bite my tongue!

15. How funny
I'm in the Process of finishing up, within the next two days, to be printed for first draft perusal, my book, "The JESUS BOLT".. about personal growth of a drug dealing cab driver who is forced to flee Fairbanks, Alaska to a Job in the tundra, where he flies around in Helicopters, looking for Uranium for the Dept of Energy, while being chased by bears, naked from a village by native folks bristling with hachets and shotguns, back to the camp where the Vietnam vet chopper pilots are pulling their guns, crashing in the tundra, eventually meeting a Nam pilot - who becomes a 'shaman of the tundra' mentor to him. Teaches him to meditate, and perform yoga on mountain tops, while cleaning up from drugs..

The Jesus Bolt is a metaphor for the actual jesus bolt, that bolt on the top of the chopper that holds all the blades on, if the jesus bolt falls out, then the next person you will be talking to will be Jesus Himself.. What holds the protaganist together, the environment, the Universe? The Jesus Bolt does.. :)

Based on my actual experiences in the late 70's (except for the drug use, and sales, of course) during two summers flying in choppers covering the northern part of Alaska, where I saw actual Evidence of Global warming (which is covered in this book as well), and Oil Companies killing and polluting the creatures up there, a place where Nowhere in the world, during the fall are there MORE animals than the Northern Slope of Alaska, nowhere.

Not really about Christianity, but more an exercise in comparative religion, and philosopy, it's got it all, sex, drugs, rock and roll, the environment, spirituality, etc.

Already have some Hollywood interest in it and I haven't even approached a publishing house as yet..

Wish me luck, I think a LOT of DU'rs will enjoy a Two fisted, fighting Irishman ready to take on the corporations after exploring the tundra and his inner Self, experiencing major Growth as a human being, which many might find rings a bell within themselves. A good way to keep the Caribou and other creatures in the forefront of the Environmental movement, with the addition of Mankind being the Stewards of the Earth.

Whatta ya think? Am I going to catch the Wave here? :)

19. perhaps of more interest to them is "Is God Green?" (PBS, Moyers)
It is about environmentalist evangelicals.
Mountain top removal and pollution of their drinking water was to much for them.
