Mistakes were made. Responsibility will be pretended to be taken, while actually shirked. The passive voice will be used.
Mr. President and members of the Cabinet, may I make an observation? It's old. We've heard "Mistakes were made." over and over and over again, ad nauseum. But we know the truth. You made the mistakes. You will be held responsible for them sooner or later. You keep building up that bad karma. If you actually did take responsibility by doing things such as making real apologies, prosecuting criminal actions, resigning your positions when you screw up badly enough, or committing seppuku, maybe some of us would start paying you the respect you seem to be demanding of us. Continue to use those worn out weasel words, and you will continue to make things worse for yourselves.
It's too late for you, Mr. Gonzales. I suggest you resign now. Those Congressional hearings are only getting started, and soon, we'll be hearing the I-word again. Yep, impeachment. Not for the President or the Vice President, as much as I'd love to see it happen, but for you, Mr. Gonzales - you're a much quicker, easier target, and impeachment of you will make it easier and more thinkable to impeach your bosses. But I don't suppose I'll see you take responsibility for the torture at Gitmo, or the dismemberment of the Constitution, or for the political firings and replacements of those U.S. attorneys who actually had a backbone and a conscience. We'll just hear the words "Mistakes were made."
Normal people don't use those words. Normal people say things like "I'm sorry" or "I screwed up" or "I made a mistake." But I keep forgetting - the people in the White House aren't normal people - they're sociopaths. A mistake was made - I assumed that people in the White House are actually human.
