Furor Over Baptist's 'Gay Baby' Article
Furor Over Baptist's 'Gay Baby' Article
By DAVID CRARY
AP

NEW YORK (March 15) - The president of the leading Southern Baptist seminary has incurred sharp attacks from both the left and right by suggesting that a biological basis for homosexuality may be proven, and that prenatal treatment to reverse gay orientation would be biblically justified.

The Rev. R. Albert Mohler Jr., one of the country's pre-eminent evangelical leaders, acknowledged that he irked many fellow conservatives with an article earlier this month saying scientific research "points to some level of biological causation" for homosexuality.

Proof of a biological basis would challenge the belief of many conservative Christians that homosexuality - which they view as sinful - is a matter of choice that can be overcome through prayer and counseling

18. God doesn't make mistakes. It would have to be explained by witchcraft
That way you can persecute a woman into the bargain. It's win-win.

3. Get this
Edited on Thu Mar-15-07 03:23 PM by DearAbby
They were upset by his assertion that homosexuality would remain a sin even if it were biologically based, and by his support for possible medical treatment that could switch an unborn gay baby's sexual orientation to heterosexual.

If they link it to be genetic, they have no choice. Their whole argument about it being an abomination, would fall flat.

5. Come to think of it, that might be the way to get the Christian Right to back stem cell research...
"We might discover a treatment for gay foetuses!!!"

23. Not worth the price. Fundies and stem cells should remain very seperate.

7. Even if it were by choice, who does it hurt?
And why would it be worth "fixing" the poor baby? Only a fundie can even try to answer that one.

All this furor over nothing! These fundies need to get a grip!

9. So.....Homosexuality isn't a "choice" anymore?
It's now a "birth defect", according to this guy?

I'm simultaneously reassured and disgusted. (There's probably a German word for that, right?)

16. Not just according to this guy.
He was merely quoting, believe it or not, science.

He was basing his editoral on scientific research that suggests that homosexuality is caused by a series of hormones that aren't properly produced by the mother during gestation.

Now - I'm not defending what this minister said - but he isn't calling it a "birth defect..." the scientists, in effect, are.

I, for one, consider this an interesting argument: if you knew your child was going to be gay and would NOT be if you took the proper cocktail of hormones to supplement your own - would you?

Afterall, as a pregnant woman, I already took Vitamin C to prevent spinabifida and progesterone to ensure implantation and fish oil to help her little brain.

Are we THAT far off from ingesting more hormones and supplements to prevent "the gay?"

It's a legitimate conversation we need to be having.

24. It's a step in the right direction, I suppose.
But I'm still disgusted that he views homosexuality as a birth defect that needs "correction".

15. To them could this possible be
the exception for Abortion? Like the poster upthread...I am both appalled and pleased with this.

One, if proven biological, the person has no choice in his/her sexual orientation. How could God create someone just to condemn them? Everything in creation, God stated was good.
Or

Two, would be a way to "weed" out undesirables, via abortion.

the Baptists would suddenly find an exception for abortion. Believe it.

Edited on Thu Mar-15-07 03:46 PM by MindPilot
Cleft palette? Mongolism? Club foot? Bad teeth? Dark skin?

These shitheads won't stop until the entire planet is populated by white heterosexual males with pickup trucks and a taste for country music...they want the whole world to be a General Motors commercial.

Have I mentioned today how much I hate these people?

17. As the mother of a Lesbian,
would it shock them to learn that we parents of gays wouldn't change a thing?

My parents have gay siblings and so do my husband's parents. My sister-in-law had 2 out of 4 kids who were gay. I have 1 out of 2. Ever take a HS Biology Genetics course? My Aunt was very open about her orientation even back in the 1950s and 1960s. It was never a "big deal" in our family. My husband's family (not him) did have problems accepting it, but I think my sister-in-law has finally come to terms with it. She joined PFLAG and I think that has helped tremendously.

This is totally a none issue in my family. I would never change a thing about my daughter. She is the same in my eyes as her straight sister.

If this God and "immorality" is so much about HATED, I want no part of it. Love is so much better than hate.

20. Right-On!
Jeez, I wish all gays and lesbians grew up with your family. I'm certainly jealous but happy for you guys.

My mom told me my being a lesbian made her not want to live any more. I'm 52 and she isn't living any more and she died, not really knowing her daughter.

22. My sister is a Lesbian
we are 15 months apart, growing up with her. I know it was not a choice. It is who she is, period. I also know, how empty this world would be for me, if she was not in it, just the way she is.

 for my sister
