Im sure this was posted earlier, but I wanted to say that Rahm Emanuel is pathetic for warning dems not to go on Colbert. What a wimp.

1. Huh?
I've been preoccupied with things this week. Did Rahm E. do that?

Fine, let all the DLC types stay off Colbert and let the real Democrats go on.

15. Colbert is most dangerous to those stealth corporatists that the DLC bunch are!
Edited on Thu Mar-15-07 07:52 PM by calipendence
When so much of what the DLC folk say and do in terms of double-speak could be interpreted as satire, probably the last thing Emmanuel wants is an audience that is looking for the subtleties of satire that would really expose the DLC's doublespeak. As you and others note here, if you're a true progressive and serving the Democratic Party constituency as you should, you shouldn't have to worry about being exposed if you're speaking the truth most of the time and can engage in the joking satire as it is truly meant to be when interacting with him!

Jeannie Moos on CNN did a bit on Stephen and the success he's had skewering the interviewee.
My fave: Guy wants to put The Ten Commandments in the courthouse, so he asks the guy: "What are the Ten Commandments?"
Guy stares blankly back, like: "I didn't know there was going to be a quiz."

4. Colbert did a bit
at the end of the year where he showed that people who came on his show were re-elected. In that case it was the repubs who were advised not to go on his show.
Certainly Democrats do better with Colbert than repubs because they generally have a sense of humor to work with as opposed to the repubs who seem to have none.

9. Why is he a wimp? Colbert's schtick is...
to make everyone look weird, and unless you can handle it, better to avoid it.

If he said "Don't go on with Nancy Grace or O'Reilly," would that make him a wimp?

Just sensible advice for the freshmen who don't really know all the ropes.

Making a big deal out of this just makes us look, once again, like whining little wimps who don't know the first thing about politics.

11. Are you serious?
BIg difference between Nancy Grace, O'REilly, and Colbert, because HE DOES A COMEDY SHOW! It isnt serious, and sometimes, people need to learn not to take life so seriously.

21. People like to see politicians come out of their shell and act like normal people...
And Colbert's show provides a great opportunity for them to do that. I've watched at least his "Better Know a District" segment at least two dozen times. Not once have I seen a Democrat come off looking bad and many Republicans don't come off looking bad either. The only ones who do are the absolute morans like Lynn Westmoreland who can't name the Ten Commandments.

What this suggests to me is that Rahm thinks Democrats should act like Bush and only go on TV shows where the environment is completely scripted and controlled.

27. You're right
Unless, as Colbert would say, you have the balls, it is a dangerous show to appear on. If you're clumsy or not quick on your feet, Colbert can be a rough one to handle.

Avoiding him is generally good advice, most politicians aren't anywhere near as quick as Colbert, but those who don't avoid people like Colbert are the ones to watch.

CQ TODAY -- March 8, 2007
By Jonathan Allen, CQ Staff

Hawkish pro-Israel lawmakers are pushing to strike a provision slated for the war spending bill that would, with some exceptions, require the president to seek congressional approval before using military force in Iran.

The influential American Israel Public Affairs Committee also is working to keep the language out, said an aide to a pro- Israel lawmaker.

The language is likely to spark an internal battle among House Democrats, some of whom fear an expansion of the Iraq War into Iran and others who are wary of sending a signal to Tehran that Congress wants to take the use of force off the table.

Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel of Illinois predicted that the language would ultimately not be included in the supplemental on the House side, although it is favored by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.; John P. Murtha, D-Pa., chairman of the Appropriations Defense Subcommittee; and some Jewish lawmakers.

Emanuel said opposition could extend beyond pro-Israel lawmakers. “‘Keep this all about Iraq’ is the view,” he said.

But a Democratic leadership aide said there are no plans to remove the provision.

“There’s heat,” the leadership aide acknowledged. “We’ve heard their concerns, but we think it’s likely to remain on the bill.”
Update: as most of you know, it was removed from the Bill

Edited on Thu Mar-15-07 09:13 PM by Hippo_Tron
When Democrats go on the show, Colbert messes around with them a bit but anybody with even the slightest sense of humor could see that it's all in could fun. When moran Republicans like Lynn Westmoreland go on, Colbert rips them apart.

25. Yarmuth, KY-3 was on The Colbert Report last Thursday night
and he did great. Colbert had a little fun with Yarmuth and Yarmuth had a little fun right back at Steven. Emanuel is dumber than a box of rocks if he doesn't think Dems can't handle a fake news show. Just proves that Dems are a lot smarter than your normal run-of-the-mill Repubics that the GOP throws at the American people. The Repubics are completely lost when they are required to Go off "talking points" and their usual hate words don't work. They all end up with that deer in headlights on the side of the road look - right before Steven runs them down. Priceless. (Suggestion to Colbert - when you run your "Better Know a District" featuring a Repubic you might want to rename the segment "Better Know a Moran."

Every Dem I've seen on the show comes off as smart and completely human with the ability to make fun and be made fun of without freaking out and needing KKKarl to do damage control the next morning.

Note - Yarmuth threw Mean Mitchy McConnell's shrew, Anne Northup, out on her ass last November. Northup would have NEVER appeared on The Colbert Report. N.E.V.E.R.

26. Yay! John Yarmuth!
Thanks..I got this from wikipedia..

"Yarmuth appeared on the March 8, 2007 episode of The Colbert Report in the show's "Better Know a District" series. In a parody of his old Yarmuth & Ziegler debate series, he was prodded to do a point/counterpoint debate against Stephen Colbert. After agreeing to the "debate," Colbert forced him to defend the shredding of kittens in woodchippers."

you had a problem with him before this post. I could be wrong, I suppose. It seems logical for politicians not to put themselves in situations where they don't really have any control. Do we want dems to win or do we want them to be cool?
