I was watching Cops yesterday, and they did a little segment with the infamous Sheriff Arpaio (Maricopa County, AZ). He was doing one of his "friendly chats" with some prisoners, and the subject of their lunches came up. Arpaio had done away with hot meals, and instead decided to feed the prisoners baloney sandwiches. He mentioned that this way, they were able to feed the prisoners for 60 cents a day. Then he said "it costs more to feed our dogs than it does you all." That freaking blew my mind. It just goes to show you the value in which this particular sheriff holds human life. This is the same sheriff who is well-known for his vast tent cities in the middle of the scorching desert, and basically making life a living hell for these guys. He was bragging about the webcam that he placed in the booking room, so that the entire world can watch as people are brought in - nevermind whether they are eventually found not guilty. I'd be willing to bet that during these "friendly chats", the prisoners are warned in advance to appear willing and jovial, and that any serious complaints or challenges will result in some form of punishment.
And yet it seems that many RWers get a hard-on for this guy.
