Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 10:37 PM by shadowknows69
Its a good thing I'm not going to be there with you guys this weekend. Because I probably wouldn't be coming back home and my wife would kill me. Because after what I just learned i'd have to cause a bit of a scene I think. I drove taxi for a while tonight and found out an update on the 3rd BCT from the 10th Mountain division who juat had their tour extended. Here's the rub. THEY HAD THEM ON U.S. SOIL ON THE TARMAC AT FORT DRUM AND THEY TURNED THE PLANES AROUND. Also the 200 or so that came back the last week are shipping right back out in 72 hours or less. I can't believe there wasn't an uprising on those planes and IMO there should have been. You can't use people like this!!! You can't take them through a year of hell and get them so close to home they can see it then take that away from them. I stopped believing in Hell a long time ago but I hope some just deity creates one just for the monsters behind all this. DAMN YOU TO HELL GEORGE BUSH!!!

you can't do this to soldiers. "Short time" is sacred to a soldier. The only beacon of hope sometimes. To have it so close and taken away is unforgiveable.

29. I can't even begin to express how enraged I am at how the troops are being abused.
No. Viet Nam was bad enough. Going alone. Coming back alone. Arriving 'home' alone. But this is horrible.

We The People are allowing this - in our name. Thousands are being killed for lies and greed - in our name. Yet, in our indolence and cowardice, we're not in the streets by the millions and risking our lives to stop this war crime - in our name. We're paying tax dollars and going to defense industry jobs while our youngest adults, in service to "The People" of this nation, are being brutalized - in our name. If we had the courage of our convictions, we'd be protesting en masse and leaving 100, 200, or more of our bodies dying in the streets to stop the abominable carnage being done - in our name. (I'm more than willing for one of them to be mine.)

So ... How about that Super Bowl?

This was an AP story today:

Emotions mixed at Fort Drum, N.Y., as troop homecomings mingle with extensions

By William Kates
ASSOCIATED PRESS

4:07 a.m. January 26, 2007

FORT DRUM, N.Y. – Families of hundreds of troops from the 10th Mountain Division will have four more months of anxious waiting after the soldiers' tours of duty in Afghanistan were extended. The Pentagon announced Wednesday that approximately 3,500 soldiers from Fort Drum in upstate New York would have their tours extended as part of a push to quell growing violence in Afghanistan.

“It has to be awful for those families. You literally count the days until they come. And then this happens,” said Rema Ottinger, whose husband expects to be among more than 3,000 troops returning home as scheduled. About 50 soldiers who had already returned home must redeploy – likely within a few days, said Col. David Clark, garrison commander. However, each soldier's family and medical circumstances will be considered, he said.

Between 100 to 150 troops were in transit from Afghanistan to the U.S. when they received their orders, Clark said. Those soldiers will be turned around and sent back immediately, the colonel said.

“Those are the guys you feel for,” said Pfc. Brian Kozlowski, who served in Iraq in 2005 and will return there this summer. “To be home, or on your way and turned back – that's got to be tough.”

God, that's so heartbreaking. Send this story to Keith!

Edited on Fri Jan-26-07 10:53 AM by shadowknows69
We definitely got the full 200 back on the ground for a few days because I saw them walking to their barracks off the buses with my own eyes and it wasn't just 50.

Edit to add. I'm going to drop the level of certainty on this post. I can't say for absolute certainty I saw more than 50 at one time but we were markedly busier that weekend.

Why would 50 people be sent ahead of the other 150? It looks like they're just trying to minimize the impact of this decision. Which actually makes it that much more calculated & callous.

107. In some cases, a forward party
returns to base early to prepare the quarters and supplies for those who are to arrive later. What you probably saw was the forward party going onto Ft. Drum to fire every thing up for the rest to come.

Happiest morning of my life was climbing onto that Continental 727, and heading to Okinawa, and eventually Travis AFB in California. I can't imagine the shock and depression I would have felt if that damn plane were turned around at that time.

8. 3,200 US soldiers’ tour extended
January 26, 2007

WASHINGTON: The Defence Department has decided to extend the combat tour of 3,200 soldiers from a 10th Mountain Division brigade in Afghanistan by four months in hopes of quelling the violence. Ben Abel, a spokesman for Fort Drum, the New York home of the 10th Mountain Division, confirmed that Defence Secretary Robert Gates had decided to extend the tour of the division’s 3rd Brigade. US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice announced on Thursday that the US planned to increase its aid to Afghanistan by $10.6 billion over the next two years. “The challenges of the last several months have demonstrated that we want to and we should redouble our efforts” in Afghanistan, Rice told reporters at NATO meeting in Brussels. Rice is expected to urge European allies to contribute aid to Afghanistan. agencies.

35. There was optimistic talk of this recently
many troops indicated that the 10th was going to mostly come home and get some time and then start deploying as a full division instead pf piecemeal to different theatres. Makes me think GW has something bigger up his sleeve and needs others in reserve. I also had a job tonight of 5 soldiers, older men (for troops anyway mid 30's early 40's), but active, but only in town for a few nights. "On business". One, soldiers don't vacation here when they're bored. Two, the only troops that usually come here for just a weekend are usually guard or reserve troops and they stay on post, or big muck a mucks. These guys were at a Ramada. Something's in the works kids and it probably won't be good. The one guys described it as "a really busy time"

30. Those filthy bastards. I hope the Bushites fry in the Hell they claim to believe in.
As I read this thread my jaw dropped in disbelief. Now I have tears on my face. This is horrible.

I wish I could go to Saturday's protest in our town and scream bloody blue murder over this -- but less than an hour ago I promised to babysit my grandson all day.

I wouldn't mind taking him along and refraining from the screaming part (he's two and a half), but the rally starts at noon and my daughter says that if he's not napping by then it won't be pretty. And she needs to take a CPR class for her job.

So...I'm taking darlin' boy to the zoo for a picnic; then drive home (shhh, fall asleep in your car seat), then into the crib. Spiritually I am sure it will be better for me to do all that than go yell.

But Mother of God, all those soldiers on the planes that turned around are someone's darling child too. There will be a reckoning. There will be a reckoning.

Hekate

39. This kind of thing comes out. Angry troops, spouses, etc.
Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 11:17 PM by MookieWilson
I remember when the USS Yellowstone got out of the shipyard and the captain did some sharp maneuvers without warning the crew. Equipment went flying all over and people were injured. Word filtered all through Norfolk about it and the captain was relieved.

The press loves to print this kind of thing.

 I can't f*cking believe this. How DARE the chickenhawks in D.C. claim to "support our troops" and then treat them like this?! I don't know whether to cry or punch something (or someone) - I feel like doing both. :( Our soldiers' jobs are hard enough without having to deal with sh!t like this. For all the talk about "honoring our men and women in uniform," this really doesn't seem like it. God bless our brave soldiers, and I really hope they can come home soon - and safe. This administration just gets worse every day!

Feedback: Fort Drum Soldiers Staying In Afghanistan
Friday, January 26, 2007, 1:24am

Update: Fort Drum said Thursday that about 50 soldiers who returned home from Afghanistan will be going back to fight the war on terror over the next few days. Officials also said approximately 150 troops on their way home will be turned around.

On Thursday, North Country Congressman John McHugh, who supported placing more troops in Afghanistan, told 7 News he was disappointed that Fort Drum soldiers would be doing the job rather than deploying new troops.

Soldiers with Fort Drum's 3rd Brigade Combat Team were informed Wednesday that they're not coming home from Afghanistan by the middle of March as originally planned.

The following is a message to families of the troops:

To all Spartan families:

The 3rd IBCT (Spartan Brigade) has been extended four months in Afghanistan on its current deployment

The date of return for the BCT is set at 11 Jun 07 when 51% of the BCT has arrived back at Ft. Drum

The purpose of the extension is to increase the pressure on insurgent elements in Afghanistan with a corresponding troop increase by retaining the 3rd IBCT

65. shadow, I do so hope that you are making this up for effect
I cling to the hope that this is hype that you have fabricated for your own reasons.

But I think that you are most likely telling the truth. I was in the service years ago, and remember some of the shit I went through.

Is it plausible? Hell, yes. Would a military run by Bushevik Officers alone (which, after six years of purges and re-purges, is what it is) do such a thing? Sure.

I share your shock and horror at such a thing. And I hope you can understand (and not take it personally), why I would hope this was a fabrication...untrue.

114. Apologies, Shadow, and please don't take it personally
I don't know you, not even really from around the boards, hence my hope. Not because I doubt you per se (I don't know you) but the ferverent hope that such things aren't happening.

As to why anyone would fabricate an untruth as big as that (or bigger), I personally couldn't understand it, either. Human history, however, is replete with millions of stories of people hwo made up big lies, and the reasons they did it are as numerous as the grains of sand on all the beaches of the world.

People make stuff up all the time for all sorts of reasons, soemtimes out of a desire to do good.

Again I apologize if I offended you. It wasn't personal against you. I just want to believe that maybe this isn't happening as you describe.

115. It is quite clear the Imperial Family views the American "Peasants" as animals
Just as their spiritual and genetic forebears did back in the Dark Ages in Europe.

But we are CITIZENS, not peasants, and THAT is what the Founding Fathers intended.

The Busheviks, had they lived then, would be the bastard aristocratic haters of America that they are now. They would be Tories and they would have helped their sovereign master, King George III, get control of those lowborn upstarts Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, et al.

Of this I am convinced. The Busheviks are Dark Ages Barons/Aristocrats, nothing more. And their ignorant and evil followers are the spiritual descendants of the stupid witch-burners who burned liberals alive when their Busheviks told them to.

Funny thing is, the Imperial Family Bush likely views their followers as little better than animals, too, but rate some standing becuase they are the Bush Family's Animals, lock, stock and barrel.

79. NPR just covered it this morning
they were interviewing families in the Ft Drum area.

While the NPR story did not mention planes turning around, they were very clear that about 200 soldiers who returned in the last week or so are being sent back to Iraq in the next few days, to stay until June. Families are PISSED.

If you really want to break the morale of soldiers, mess with their families. This is not going to be good.

I hope your boy makes his wedding. I heard a nightmare tale that one of the guys returning this time around and being sent right back told one of our drivers he had to cancel his, as if one man would make the difference over there they couldn't let this guy stay or come back for his big day. The military needs to start treating our people like heroes and not slaves. There has to be ways to hold together an effective fighting force and still allow its members thier basic human rights and dignities. I hope someone takes some notice finally of the brave marchers in Washington this weekend. I feel so bad I can't go because I feel the one in 2005 go insufficient press.

I know that after I went on a wonderful vacation to Europe, after a seven-hour flight, all I wanted to do was get home. I can't imagine spending a year in the hellish violence of Afghanistan, half a day or more in the air, then landing, only to turn around and fly back to the Afghanistan.

I'm pretty sure I'd probably break down. I don't know how they do it.

They were on the tarmac in NY and were not allowed off the plane and sent back to Iraq instead?

I finding confirmation that they were "on the way home" and turned around but not that they actually got home and then weren't allowed off the plane.

Not that it's much better but I just want to make sure I have the facts straight when I send out my cuss notes and LTTEs.

112. Trying to ascertain that
Its probable at this point that at least 50, I claim through personal experience that I think its more, got home last week just to be informed they would be shipping out again within the week. Another 150-200 are the ones who were "turned around" and we're not clear right now if it was in the air or at fort drum. I just found a new source on Fort Drum that I may be able to get some better info from in the future. All statements in theis story are based on secodn and third hand accounts and what has been released to the press which IMO is a little vague.
