You can also call this, "How the Republicans are trying to pass the buck and dodge responsibility for getting caught by their own meanness."

These seem to be the ones I'm catching that they're using to lay the foundation for a counter-claim of outing a cover CIA agent:

(1) The CIA was required to take affirmative measures to protect her identity.

(2) On an annual basis, the CIA was suppose to go before Congress and report what those affirmative measures were.

(3) If Plame was covert, why did she give $1000.00 to Al Gore and list her Brewster-Jennings employer.

I don't know how any of this gets the Bush-Cheney gang off the hook for being reckless and irresponsible. But it is fun watching the Republicans gasping for air.

1. Well it is obvous
if the CIA did not protect her identity, and Waxman is sumarizing it for you.

(Also accusing her of spreading hearsay)

3. Toensing is looking desperate.
She's redefining words, according to Waxman.

2. Brewster-Jennings was publicly known

its covert status wasn't. Per donating to Gore:

Yes sir I gave a donation to the Gore campaign because I didn't want a drug addicted, lying corporate criminal and military deserter to be (s)elected president. And I knew that a gore administration would not commit treason and expose my identity because my husband might someday tell the truth about it.

4. Correct. Toensing is grasping for straws.
You can see it in her eyes, and in her shoulders. Her body language is so weaselly.

6. This stuff is theater for their base - they know it has no bearings to the matter at hand
but they can further manipulate the numbskull wing of their party who will somehow believe that this is the most crucial part of the case.

8. Toensing is trying to claim she's not covert as strictly interpreted
"under the law." And I suspect she is referring to the fact that it only applies to someone who is covert overseas. However, Plame did go on covert missions overseas in question, so she should qualify. That covert protection doesn't stop just because someone comes back on U.S. soil.
