HELEN THOMAS: An Embarrassing Stench Has Arisen In the Dept Of Justice

Gonzales Needs to Remember Loyalties
by Helen Thomas

WASHINGTON -- If there is one federal agency that should always be squeaky clean, it is the Justice Department.

But under Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, the nation's chief law enforcement officer, an embarrassing stench has arisen in the department because of the firing of eight U.S. attorneys.

Some irate Democratic lawmakers -- especially Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. -- are calling for his resignation for what smacks of politicization of the Justice Department.

........................

It may be too late, but the attorney general has to understand that his oath to uphold the Constitution pre-empts his loyalty to the president and Republican Party.

2. It's the same lesson *bush never learned
...that his oath to uphold the Constitution preempts his desire to head an illegal dictatorship.

4. The sworn oath to uphold the Constitution cannot be met while being loyal to der Fuhrer imo because
a compelling argument can be made that the entire neocon agenda is wholly antithetical to the Constitution and the rule of law: virtually everything done undermines both and it is abundantly clear for all to see where the loyalty of each minion, lock-stepping congress-critter, and media outlet lies. 5. Great line, but the answer is yes, it's too late.
"It may be too late, but the attorney general has to understand that his oath to uphold the Constitution pre-empts his loyalty to the president and Republican Party."

Willingness to put lyalty to Bush and the GOP is the primary factor for inclusion in their party. They place their party and desire for a dictatorship ahead of the United States.

7. Bad Helen
No wonder they intend to toss her out of the front row of the press room. I hope she lives forever and grows roots.

I find myself wondering why nobody else has brought up the phrase "vast right-wing conspiracy" to describe the reorganization of the U.S. attorney's office as a tool to squelch and harass the Democrats while enabling the worst - albeit loyal - members of the Republican party to act as they wish, without fear of indictment. Poor Duke Cunningham and Bob Ney, if they could only have hung on a little longer their troubles would have evaporated just as surely as our civil liberties have.

Alberto Gonzales has repeatedly demonstrated he shares the stunning disconnect from reality demonstrated by so many in this administration. I fail to see how people who see the world and the law as they wish it to be and not as it is, are less of a danger to our ideals than radical Islam. Then again, enough of us voted Republican in the last two elections to make the theft of those elections almost plausible, so I guess we deserve it.
