Barack Obama's fifth grade class picture from Honolulu

HONOLULU, March 12 — To his high school classmates, Barack Obama was a pleasant if undistinguished student, the guy who seemed happiest on the basketball court, the first to dive into the pumpkin carving at Halloween, the one whose oratorical prowess was largely limited to out-debating classmates over the relative qualities of point guards.

Kelli Furushima was a classmate of Barack Obama at the Punahou School. She displayed her yearbook from 1979, in which “Barry Obama” expressed regret that Ms. Furushima and he had not dated. But Mr. Obama’s family here in Hawaii saw a more complex young man, a person whose racial confusion and feelings of alienation were matched with equal parts ambition, disquietude and lofty notions about where his internal struggles might lead.

“There was always a joke between my mom and Barack that he would be the first black president,” his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, said in an interview over tea. “So there were intimations of all this early on. He has always been restless. There was always somewhere else he needed to go.”

4. Check out their outfits. What a happy looking class.
School in Hawaii must have been so relaxing. Some of those kids look like they have on no shoes. :)

6. Eyeglasses in front
On second look, don't they look like a pair of those joke glasses?? Or do I need to put on my glasses so I can see better.

They do look like a happy bunch. The corncob conservatives would not approve.

9. Yeah I guess
I blew it up and it looks like glare from the sun in the middle of the glasses. Kid does look a bit like Ralphie actually.
