She broke his heart in third grade, he said, and he never forgot.

Twelve years later, Anthony Michael Perone has admitted to sending threatening missives to his former classmate and faces up to 10 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

Last June, when federal authorities searched the home in Fairmont, Minn., where Perone, 20, lived with his parents, they found a loaded .22-caliber rifle he'd bought in May, a backpack filled with ammunition, a suitcase packed with clothes and a machete, "as well as documents and other materials reflecting imminent, anticipated travel to Connecticut," according to an affidavit filed in the case.

When federal authorities questioned Perone and his family, they discovered he had not written his return address on the letters. Rather, he had left the letters for his mother to mail, and thinking they were "simply innocuous letters intended for a friend in Connecticut," she wrote Perone's name and address on them, the affidavit says.

Perone's guilty plea to federal charges of mailing threatening letters was a result of a

6. Stalkers are pretty sick, actually
They fantasize a romance and hang somebody's face on it. They become desperate for any attention at all. The delusions are such that if it's a famous person, there are secret messages being sent whenever that person is on TV; if it's a real person, that the restraining order is really a love letter that the object of the fantasy is too diffident to send. You know, they're playing hard to get, they really love the stalker despite the court orders, bars on the windows, half dozen locks on the door, and the Rottweiler.

They're just as delusional as any other crazy person, even though they can function in other areas of their lives, although most of them tend to have rather low level jobs since the obsession gets in the way a lot.

Plus, they can ruin lives. I'm glad this guy was caught before he was able to do anything serious. I hope he gets the help he needs and, yes, drugs will likely be part of it.

8. That I know
I was just amazed by the fact that he was hooked on her since the third grade. That's a pretty early age to start an obsession (though I do know it's possible to have crushes at that age). I never imagined anything so lasting resulting from an interest developed at that young age. Then again, the guy--it would seem--isn't an average person.

9. I doubt it started then
He probably didn't start getting sick until puberty. Why he hung her face on his delusion seems pretty random to me. It could just as well have been a teacher, a neighbor, or anything else female including showbiz people.

I doubt he thought about her much until he turned 13 or so.

10. Good point
The apparent randomness factor makes stalking that much scarier. :scared:

2. Quick, drug that man into submission!
But not with anything wholesome or life-affirming, to be sure. :smoke:

No, this man is a dangerous lunatic. His drugs must be expensive and have toxic side-effects that won't be discovered until half the freaking country is hooked on them.

7. He may go to the Big House, but he is set for life.
If he can keep writing poetry such as that, he will never have to work.

11. Yeah, maybe he can get someone to publish his stuff for him. End up
being a sort of celebrity, like Hinkley or for that matter OJ.
