Political Quiz
Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 01:52 PM by Gman
Ever wonder where you beliefs were on the LIBERAL versus CONSERVATIVE scale. Here is an easy way to find out by taking this short 25 question list.

I think some of the questions are actually phrased to see how conservative you are.

I scored a 5, Ted Kennedy.

But I think I am more liberal than that. Some of the questions ~~ could go either way on because they did not seem too clear and did not give an answer that fit what I thought.

I mean, trust the IRS or FBI? Most of us would probably pick "neither."

11. I'm a 3.
Probably explains why I think Hillary Clinton is right-ish. Or maybe it's because I'm Canadian, and our the centre of our political spectrum sits farther left than yours does, kind of like when you put a capo on your guitar to change the tuning of all the strings at once.

I think it might be interesting to compare the scores of US and Canuck posters once we get enough replies.

but some of the questions and answers seemed a bit weird to me.

Like the Haiti/Korea one (are there issues in Haiti and Korea that I'm ignorant of, and if so how do they relate to the US?) and the AIDs one - I imagine you get a plus towards the conservative side for saying that AIDS shouldn't get more money. but I said no because we need research money for all three and I have no problem with that research money being equal for all three.

I also said that I think government is too big, which I'm sure pushed me towards the conservative side. But the reason I voted yes on that is because the military-industrial complex is too big.

On decent tests, I always come out 100% liberal. :) Like on the political compass, I'm on the left end of the chart and pretty close to the bottom edge.

24. The test has too many non-political questions
The "Who do you trust more" questions seem like they would cause test-takers to score much more conservative than they really are. There are both liberal and conservative doctors and both liberal and conservative trial lawyers. Why would trusting one over the other determine somebody's core political beliefs?

My score on the http://franz.org/quiz.htm test was a 17.

In one of my first posts on this forum I said that I have a conservative bent on some things. Obviously it is not my dominant thinking. I'm a populist in favor of advancing the interests of those 80% of Americans that been screwed under Bush's regime.

I'm going to try and add this post as my first post to my journal and include a self introduction below that I made in one of my first posts.

May I introduce myself?

This introduction is slightly belated as I’ve already taken the liberty of posting, and as mentioned above I have appreciated the welcome comments that some have posted. I’ve read the forum rules and would appreciate feedback from members and the moderators if my views are at all welcome here, knowing that any views expressed do not provide blanket immunity from being removed as a disruptor. At some point I would like to contribute and support this forum, but only if views such as my own are accepted and debated.

The simple political ideology tests indicate I’m liberal, but honestly I’m not a traditional liberal, which is why I’m posting this. I tend to be candidate minded as opposed to party minded which probably makes me more independent than what the truly party minded people appreciate.

I have strongly opposed Bush and the Iraq war from day one, and in fact can’t think of one thing that Bush has done that’s been good for the American people. He has screwed this country worse than any Benedict Arnold traitor that I know.

I believe strongly in helping those on the bottom and promoting a strong middle class and a strong America. I agree with those that put the people of America and their interests first, which means I oppose illegal immigration (is this a problem here?). I believe illegal immigration hurts every American especially those trying the hardest to survive, while it puts lots of money in the pocket of well to do business owners. I believe strongly in legal immigration that has the approval of the American people. I oppose amnesty as it rewards those that bypass our laws.

I believe in trade as long as it is fair and balanced. I believe in organized labor as it provides a balance of power between labor and business in the economy. I believe in equal rights and opportunities for all, but not more rights for some. I support gay marriage and am ambivalent on the abortion issue. That means I’d just as soon not see it done but I don’t oppose it. I believe women should have control over their bodies.

I believe strongly that government should be run using the same financial rules that any family has to use, and that is to spend no more than they earn. I strongly opposed Bush’s tax cuts. I have a mindset that believes multi-national corporations work very hard at using America when it is in their interests, but generally have no special loyalty to the USA, and that Wal-Mart has not been good for America.

I try very hard not to be confrontational but I’m not perfect. That’s about it. BTW I’ve posted for some time comments in the DNC blog too.

And I've been here happily since 2004. I consider myself a libertarian (the kind with a small "l", since the kind with the big "L" have been taken over by disgruntled and ashamed right-wingers), but due to the current political situation in America, I support Democratic candidates until further notice.

Sometimes the really far-out people annoy me here (almost always the anti-intellectuals and the "culture uber-alles" people), but for the most part I have found that my outlook meshes well with that of the average member here on DU.

I got a 16 on that test, by the way, right between Bill and Colin.

Welcome to DU. Hope you stick around.

54. You're definitely welcome here.
I, too, have a few conservative fibers in my weave (I scored 15), and there's a home for me here at DU.

I struggle with some of the socialists here, bunny huggers, word police, and a few others, but you learn to ignore most of them.

Points of view that are somewhat conservative can be presented and espoused here as long as they are not presented with the single intent of inflaming the natives. It is also possible to roll up one's sleeves and challenge traditional liberal concepts without being officially reprimanded or having your posts deleted (most of the time).

A quick way to get in trouble, however, is to get seriously nasty about someone's pet candidate. Criticism is fine, even harsh criticism. Just avoid the appearance of 1) trying to unravel someone's candidacy and 2) getting personal in hammering an opponent, and all will be well.

Welcome aboard.

40. Based on what? The founders were mostly liberal, and if they did one of those quizes
Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 06:44 PM by NDP
like this one, they would score more on the conservative end. Liberal and Conservative don't mean what people assume that they mean these days. Since when did "trust" define liberal or conservative? Liberals have a more organic view of the government ("The American family; we're all in this together"), and Conservatives have a more skeptical view of human beings and a more mechanistic view of the government ("My" family; "My" money; "It's every man for himself"). Even if you believe in the "American Family," that doesn't mean that you "trust" anyone. Heck, you don't trust everyone in your family, and many people trust their "friends" more than some people who live in the same house with them.

This poll is full of wedge issues instead of theory. It was clearly created by a person who believes most of the crap put forth by the media, because it's reflected in their questions.

57. Here's a much better political quiz that has been around for years and is constantly updated
It's from www.politicalcompass.org and I think the questions are much better and you can answer each of them based on a range of agreement or disagreement. Your results are posted on graph with economic ratings on one axis and authoritarian or libertarian rankings on the other. I am more of a communist and a libertarian than Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. I think you all should take it and see how your results compare. It's a longer quiz but I think it is way more accurate.
