There IS hope for the future....
Edited on Mon Nov-03-08 09:24 AM by burythehatchet
BACKGROUND

My son is 10. His mom and I are divorced and his mom is remarried. His mom is a terrific mother and loves him unconditionally. Over the past 6 months he and I have talked a lot about politics when he is with me on the weekend. Lately his questions (our discussions always begin with his questions) have been more and more pointed. I am becoming completely amazed by this little boy's ability to see through the BS and get right to the heart of an issue, like many kids I imagine.

THIS PAST WEEKEND

This past Saturday, his questions became quite a bit more pointed and his commentary became jaw-dropping. Here are some highlights:

He tells me that at school (a private school where probably 80% support McCain) a kid asked him who he likes for President, "Obama" my son says, the other says "wrong answer, it's McCain". My son asks him if he knows whether Obama is a Democrat or a Republican. The kid says "Republican". "Wrong answer" says my boy.

In his class, each kid had to lick a piece of paper out of a box and do research on the person named on the piece of paper. The only choices were Obama and McCain. My son pulled McCain. Then he spent the rest of the class trying to trade with someone who picked Obama.

His stepfather is 100% Republick. His mom goes along with her husband. He and I are looking at a map and I am explaining which states are Dem and which are Republick when he turns to me and says "it's tough living with Republicans"!!??!!

I never get to see him during the week because his school is pretty far from my house. Nonetheless, as I'm driving him back to his mom's he asks me if he can stay at my place on Tuesday night to watch the election results. At this point I look out of my car window my misty eyes can see that there is a future.

2. I advised him against it because this week is testing week
and I didn't want to disrupt his routine. But when I got home I thought about the historic nature of this night and the life-long memories it will produce, so I might change my mind.
