Government (and record companies) move to shut down internet radio:

via new, sky-high "copyright fees:"

We will not be silenced!

The US Copyright Office has released their new set of rates for the payment of royalties by Internet Radio -- royalty rates so high that they threaten to put RP and every other US-based indie webcaster out of business. With your help, we will not allow this to happen!

Here's how you can help:

# Educate yourself. Read Bill's blog post and Kurt Hanson's newsletter. The record company propoganda -- saying they're "protecting the artists" -- is starting to spread. Get the facts.

# Sign our online petition and open letter to the US Congress (US residents only, since it's directed at the US Congress).

# Send an email message to your Congressmembers. You can use our suggested text, change it, or write your own message. We then suggest that you print your email (you'll get a copy) and mail it to your Representative and Senators and, if possible, call their offices. Look up their addresses and phone numbers here.

# Make your voice heard online and in the mainstream media. Let everyone know what a personal loss it would be to you if RP and your other favorite Internet radio stations went away.

# Stay tuned for other ways you can help. In particular, we'll be searching for ways that non-US listeners can get involved. You can also participate in the discussion about this issue in our Listener Forum.

2. And As Far As I Know
...you can't copy streaming stuff. Been there, done that and it is not easy to do.

Meanwhile, just turn on your FM radio (which millions more listen to every day than to Interent streams), hook up your DVD/CD RW and record away!

What a bunch of ninnies.

3. I dont make profit from my broadcast...
Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 08:12 PM by and-justice-for-all
... I do the artist a major favor by playing their tracks for them. I do not encourage P2P file sharing and I do however encourage people to purchase what they hear with links to outlets that sell what we play. Everything we play is bought and not downloaded illegally...

What Internet broadcast are is a threat to megaradio monsters, thats it, competition which does not try to sell you more garbage that you do not need or spill the usual drivel over and over....

I will not shut down my broadcast simple because megaradio is intimendated...FUCK THEM!

You cant snag tracks from our site either...

4. nobody is shutting down internet radio, sorry.
internet radio is free to do anything it wants except use somebody else's stuff.

Like use your its own stuff.

so internet radio can come up with its own stuff, which would be free to them right?

right.

uh oh, that would be accepting responsibility.

funny how its ok to use somebody elses stuff but when somebody wants YOUR stuff, that's bad.

6. um, they're not "using" it, sorry. They already pay a fee...
...and this would jack the fee up. More media conglomerate blindness.

5. When cars were invented, horse and buggie makers went away
It's time that the record companies acknowledge that they have no reason to exist anymore. Technology has created a new way for music to be sold and "records" or "albums" are no longer needed. Record companies are obsolete.
