4. Not defending the surge
Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 07:48 PM by sanskritwarrior
but a military offensive entails higher casualties for those on offense. To be fair me and my bros in my battalion are curious why the number is so low. The company betting pool said that 100 or more would die the first month. Looks like Top and my platoon leader (LT) are gonna be out some money. Forgive us our ghoulish sense of humor, it's how we deal........

53 this month 85 since the surge began......either we are doing better force protection, the insurgents are running away or we are lucky. An offensive of 80,000 plus US soldiers should have had more than 85 deaths in the givn time period if you use most accepted metrics.......

As for our unit 180 or so more days and we are going back in......not much ever really changes....

Your point is well taken...But since the Sadrists in Baghdad are basically laying low for now, I'm a little surprised by the numbers.

I wish you and your bros the best when you go back.

9. I think the sadrists are done for a while
heard from a guy over there, the Mehdi Army has split into three factions.

One faction wants peace and cooperation with the US and maliki gotv.

One faction wants even more violence directed at the sunnis

Third faction wants to lay low and side with the winning faction.

Just an anectdote, but it's from a close friend in Miliary Intel.........

10. It isn't ghoulish, it's a way to cope. I totally get that.
But I don't exactly get your 80,000 figure...is that the previously reported ~20,000 plus support?...or something else?
I guess I thought the current levels in country were about 140K....help me out here. :-)

13. Total US forces in the greater Baghdad area
total between 80-90 thousand..........By the time all surge forces are in place it will be closer to 100,000. Due to less insurgent activity in Mosul and Tal Afar the Brigade up in Ninewah province has been moved down to Baghdad leaving 1 battalion for Mosul.........

12. GI Deaths Are Surging...THANKS BUSH!
I liked how Bill Maher said the surge is "working" the same way daddy stops beating up mommy when the police arrive on the front porch.

Permanent whack-a-mole and permanent bases and permanent death means unending profits for the defense contractors -- and the "independent" Iraqi government is going to hand almost all the oil fields to the oil companies, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! Just keep them soldiers coming now....disgusting...disgusting.

15. Our cow, Lisa Murkowski, is in Iraq now and is writing about how
she 'agonizes' over the war but being there has shown her the 'truth' and she now supports it. She says that the troops never 'agonize' over the mission, but that all the agonizing in the congress undermines them. She is the biggest cow pat of them all. But what can you expect from a Murkowski?
