"Journey of faith" turns to journey of filth

RAINSVILLE—David Earl McCarthy, 53 a convicted sex offender from Oregon, is currently in custody in Kentucky on charges of Failure to Register and impersonating a Federal officer, according to the Kentucky State Police. McCarthy may also face charges in other states. But before he reached Kentucky, the sex offender traveled through DeKalb County and throughout the country- conning his way into homes and churches and evading law enforcement.

McCarthy claimed to have been a retired military man who had lost his wife and son to a drunk driver, none of which The Post has been able to confirm as valid. He also claimed to be a youth pastor who was traveling the country in order to witness Christ to others.

McCarthy’s stories were repeated in a recent Post feature entitled “A Journey of Faith”. While here, McCarthy stayed in the home of a local Christian couple with small children.

The family in question prefers to remain anonymous, but reports that the children were unharmed. They were the lucky ones, because McCarthy’s journey turned out to be a journey of filth.

McCarthy has four convictions for sex offenses on his record, dating back to 1979, according to Kentucky authorities and the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Registry. He has been arrested in three states: Oregon, Louisiana, and North Carolina. The National Sex Offender Registry confirms that McCarthy’s vehicle is a mountain bike, and that he “has been known to threaten victims with a knife.” The Registry also states that McCarthy’s normal targets would be teenage males.
