A Chuck Hagel (R) Run will tear the Repugs Apart: Think 1968 all over again
As the polls stand right now, if there is a crowded Repug field and Hagel got all the anti-war votes, he would take 25-35% of the Republican votes (as of today). Could you imagine a hung convention with McCain, Giuliani, Hagel, and someone like Brownback holding evangelical delegates. Yikes, what a mess. It might make 1968 look like a cake walk.

...THE NEBRASKA REPUBLICAN SAID YESTERDAY ON C–SPAN'S ``NEWSMAKERS'' THAT HE MUST DECIDE SOON IF HE HOPES TO GET INTO THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE. HAGEL HAS MADE NATIONAL NEWS OF LATE FOR BUCKING HIS PARTY AND HELPING DEMOCRATS DRAW UP A RESOLUTION OPPOSING PRESIDENT BUSH'S PLAN TO SEND MORE U–S TROOPS TO IRAQ. HAGEL ALSO HAS HAD HARSH WORDS FOR THE PRESIDENT'S POLICY, CALLING IT ``THE MOST DANGEROUS FOREIGN POLICY BLUNDER CARRIED OUT SINCE VIETNAM.''...http://www.kduhtv.com/viewStory.php?id=5315

1. Hagel has demonstrated that he can grab a headline.
John McCain must be thinking, "Oh Jesus, I'm trying to kiss up to the Right and Hagel blasts us from the Left."

McCain was so stressed over this that he just nodded off during the State of the Union address. I thought the speech sucked as well, but I hope McCain at least woke up to hear Jim Webb afterward.

Hagel's coming on real, real strong and looks like he's going to be a force to be reckoned with.

2. Hagel would take all of McGiuliromney's votes - it would be between...
Hagel & Brownback, ultimately.

6. Agree. He looks like he was slapped around for a couple of hours
by mobsters.

Did you catch him nodding off during Bush's address Tuesday night? As if the sedatives kick in after 9:00 and everything turns real blurry-like.

9. Well I hope not
I want to see his 'maverick', 'moderate', straightshooter' status shot down once and for all and having him go through a primary may be needed to do that. He's as phoney as they come and I'm sick of the media sucking up to this guy. It really bothers me that he is such a media idol, he deserves no respect. Let him stay out there, he'll be destoyed by his fellow GOPers or himself.

Heard on the local radio today that McCain is polling 40% among republicans here.

Locals are refering to his "Straight-Talk Express" as the "Double-Talk Express". He isn't liked much here these days.

7. The republicans hate Hagel and see him as a traitor; I really wish they
would see his worth. I have always thought him to be one of the good guys. A republican but, true to his beliefs and not to go like the others and pander to the fringies. He seemed like the solid republicans that use to be the party. Though my ideas do not mesh with his I always respected the man. He wasn't like Frist or Santorium. Just one of those solid republicans.

14. Yes, really bad... subdued, tired, as if he were answering the questions
while sleepwalking.

There was NO twinkle in his eyes (it used to be there).

10. Republicans generally despise the truth
when it doesn't match their ideology. It's more self-serving for them to to repeat past mistakes, look the other way, and ignore reality. Hagel is conservative to be sure, but like Barry Goldwater before him, he's a rare Republican who puts principle about his party.

17. Hagel:
against gay marriage

pro-life

for drilling in ANWAR

for Bush's proposed SS plan

I could go on and on....he's supported Bush 98% of the time except for this current issue which has obviously struck a personal chord in him. He's about as conservative as a Republican can get. I've never thought him one of the good guys.

is against. Also if he ran against a Dem like Hilliary or whoever, who would voters vote for? This is only one issue (Iraq) that we agree with him on.
