Movie "A Face In The Crowd" on TCM in a few minutes.
It's a cynical movie about the media and politics. It's a great movie cautioning people about TV and it's from 1957 when tv was just a baby. It stars Andy Griffith and he's actually amazing. Sheriff Taylor he's not. Check it out if you have a chance.

1. Was gonna post this myself - watching it now
There are some parallels to the movie "Network" that came about 20 years later. While this one, like Network, is about media manipulation of the public, it also focuses on a downright despicable individual hidden by his vastly different public persona/image.

Great movie!

"Aw shucks, I'm just an ole country boy . . . "

Lonesome Rhodes: This whole country's just like my flock of sheep!
Marcia Jeffries: Sheep?
Lonesome Rhodes: Rednecks, crackers, hillbillies, hausfraus, shut-ins, pea-pickers . . . .They think like I do. Only they're even more stupid than I am, so I gotta think for 'em. . . . .

5. It's Sunday morning now, and I saw it last night
Griffith's performance might be considered "over the top" by today's standards, but it was riveting. I could not take my eyes off him...he was in almost every scene. I remember reading that Griffith, in his private life, while doing this movie, became Lonesome, and lost alot of friends and family. The simplified message of the movie has come to pass, unfortunately, but most of us have recognized the cynical use of the media to promote people and ideas which are detrimental to America. What a movie!

6. I don't think that Griffith's performance is over the top at all — I think it's
one of the greatest film performances ever.

7. Andy Griffith's tour de force...
He is simply amazing in this flic. Over the top manipulative sociopath. I wish he had played more dramatic roles, because this one movie shows he had the chops to play anyone.

Defines "chewing up the scenery".

8. Back in 2000, when Bush called NYT's Clymer an "a-hole" into open mike ...
... allegedly not realizing mike was on, while gossiping with Unca Dick ... I was reminded SO much of Lonesome Rhodes (one guy when the mikes are on, another when he thinks the mikes are off).

So many parallels between Lonesome and Our Dear Preznit.
