1. No. Not until 2010.
He left the military in 2000, the waiting period is 10 years.

8. No restrictions there... though I'm kind of hoping Obama keelhauls that dept.

At the very least it needs a massive overhaul and a name change.

Though of course, Clark's qualifications aren't really focused on domestic security stuff. He'd be better off involved in foreign policy. National Security Advisor, maybe?

12. I'd like to see Richard Clarke have a shot at that.
He tried in vain to get BushCo to take terrorism seriously before 9/11, but was shut out.

And, he was the only one to have the sack to publicly apologize to the families of the victims afterward, even though he was doing everything within his power to prevent it.

Intelligence, experience, determination, and accountability would make a nice change at the top at Homeland Security.

10. That rule has been waived before and can be again
That's the beauty of setting precedents. :)

2. Clark deserves it
He is an American hero and has served his entire life for us, and he has been glossed over too long in the Democratic party

3. I don't think he'll go that way
I'd love to see it but I just don't think so for some reason. He better not stay with Gates, that's all I know.

6. see post 5 above, I forgot about the 10 year rule
That would explain why there hasn't been any "buzz" about him as a choice.

7. Hear Hear, My Friend!
Whoever it is, it must be a Democrat.

Putting a Republican in that position would be disasterous; it would send the message Democrats really cannot be relied on in military matters.

11. I believe Magistrate knows that
which explains the "hear hear"

I think that was I'm response to the notion of tapping Hagel or keeping Gates.

13. Oh gawd ........
..... he was **never** a Republican. That is an urban myth.

Not to be mean or snarky, but please read this. It will take perhaps a minute or minute and a half;
