Why all the hateful, negative focus on gay marriage?
We have two ugly wars, people going without ultra necessary medical care, we have crumbling infrastructure that is coming apart and killing our citizens....and thousands of assholes care soooooooo much about two people of the same sex who love each other and who want some legal sanctions on this relationship that instead of getting concerned about REAL issues, these assholes spend MILLIONS to make sure two people of the same sex cannot make a legally binding commitment to each other which is known by the word "marriage." They do this because gay people threaten the institution commonly known as marriage?

WTF???? :wtf:

Someone PLEASE explain this to me, OK? Why? Why in the hell give a damn about someone else being happy and in a relationship he/she wants and why give a damn if this relationship is legally sanctioned?

Why all the hatred of gays and lesbians??? I simply do NOT understand. Yesterday I had a converstion with two supporters of YES on Prop 8...and I am hearing about this "agenda" bullshit again. One of the assholes going on about this is a very, very intelligent lawyer...and the asshole could NOT articulate what the hell he was talking about in regard to the "gay" agenda. Well, I sure as hell do not think of him as being very intelligent anymore. Unbelievable bullshit from him.

I just do not get what the hell kind of threat that gays or lesbians are to anyone, to society in general, or what the hell the problem is with some straight people. I am straight and I have never had a problem with anyone being gay. It simply never crossed my mind that this was a "bad" thing. How the hell did being gay or lesbian become something evil to so many people?

This shit just angers and puzzles me to NO end!

1. Honest answer: In a country as stratified by wealth, class, and status as ours...
people treasure the ability to abuse others as they feel they have been abused.

It's disgusting, and all too human.

5. Maybe that is it....
...but I simply do not see where they are coming from with some of the bullshit they spout ~~ like gay marriage can and will destroy straight marriage.

Unreal!

2. If you have to ask that question, there's nothing
anyone can say to you at this point that will enable you to "get it" but I'll try and put it in simple terms.

If ANY person or group is being denied equal protection under the law, we are all denied liberty.

3. I most certainly understand that point ~~
~~ what I cannot understand is why all the hatred directed towards gays and lesbians on an issue that has less than -0- impact on the lives of others.

Why discriminate against them in a personal matter that does NOT in any manner effect society one iota?

7. Short Answer:
Because their churches tell them that, in order to get into heaven, they must hate gays. And women. And non-Christians. That would be the same church that claims dinosaurs and people lived on the earth at the same time.

20. But the question here is, why would the churches ...
... focus on this. Yes, it's easy scapegoating, but there are so many other issues they could rally their people around that could make a positive impact on our world.

4. Because right now
All the right-wingers have to hold on to are the tired, threadbare remnants of old wedge issues like this.

They have lost their perceived authoritative positions on pretty much all of the major issues you listed, so they turn, yet again, to the wedge issues.

Unfortunately, the majority of Americans still oppose same sex marriage, so it is the natural place for the demoralized right to retreat to when all other ground has been taken by their opponents.

6. OK...that makes sense why this issue is being promoted.
In other words, they are stirring up the base to get them out with an issue that really is bullshit, but has an emotional appeal?

8. Pretty much
But its more than just the base.

Look at California and Prop. 8.

A state as blue as Cali would have had no problem defeating Prop 8 if it were only supported by the republican base.

Plenty of otherwise progressive voters had a hand in that clusterfuck.

We have much work to do on this issue, and I am ready to step up my efforts... even here in ultra-red Alabama.

9. I don't get it either. Their lying ads were too successful.
I know the ads here in California were disgusting. They kept showing photos of kids going to a lesbian couple's wedding. They got away with blatant lies because lies are all they can come up with.

They're conflating being gay with being pedophiles without saying it outright. They know people want to protect children and they fed the fears. It's like the ad the McCain campaign tried to push about Obama wanting to teach children about sex when the reality is he supported teaching them to protect themselves.

Fighting sexual innuendo and smears has got to be one of the more difficult things to do. But fighting for equal rights is every American's duty.

12. And I'd love to know what...
kids at lesbian weddings has to do with anything...fuck this pisses me off. I lived in Los Angeles for 5 years and I am so disappointed in California right now.

My mom is gay and I LIVED WITH her and her girlfriend. My uncle is gay as well and he and I are very close. Both my sister and I have perfectly happy, heterosexual marriages. I couldn't give a rat's ass if someone is gay. I always wanted my mom and my uncle to be happy. Fuck the stupid Mormon Church and I'm sorry to say it, but fuck the Catholic Church as well (I was raised Catholic). I'm tired of the Church's hypocrisy.

18. Another disgusting piece of shit idea
of theirs that totally doesn't make any sense

OK...they're so goddamned "Pro Life" they don't want innocent babies aborted.

Once the babies are born they don't give two shits about what happens to them. These kids can be starved, beaten, abused, sexually abused, murdered...they don't give a shit.

OH!!!! Until it comes to these POOR KIDS having to witness gay weddings!!!!

Then all of a sudden it does matter.

Like I said in another post, sometimes I feel sorry for those people, sometimes I hate them. This is one example of why I hate them....

for their gross stupidity and the refusal to see logic

aughhhhh

I'm getting upset now and my stomach is churning....have to stop!!!!

15. Yeah, I agree, the ads were disgusting....
...but you make an interesting point ~~ the silent message that being gay = being a pedophile. I cannot believe that some idiots actually buy bullshit like that! But...I do think that some do equate gay and child molestation. How stupid and sick, IMO.

10. These are distractions being delivered to us so that we can
keep our minds off of more important issues. You list one of the very crucial one's being argued away-access to real "best practices to medical treatment".

11. society needs a scapegoat...
and right now, gays are "it". Insecure and frightened people need to feel that they have some control over the unamed evil that lurks somewhere out there and is responsible for all that is wrong with and in their own lives. If they can name the "evil"...and it doesnt much matter who or what it is...just that they can identify it and name it...then a sense of security is achieved. It will change though as society grows....and we are seeing the beginnings of that growth right now in our country. This will change. It will.

17. Mental incapabilities...
on the part of people who need something outside themselves to tell them how to think and why...because they're fundamentally incapable of making those decisions on their own based on rational thinking.

Issues are either black or they're white

If they ever have to deal with so-called "gray areas", their minds literally shut down.

Voila!!!! There's the Bible, telling them all how to think and act! Since it's too much trouble to form their own opinions based on lots of introspection, it's oh-so-handy to have a ready source of opinions.

Sometimes I hate them...sometimes I feel sorry for the poor bastards.

Either way, I do often wish that we could just cordon off a section of the country (North and South Dakota, maybe) and let them all live there with their own little rules and laws, not allowing them to have a say in the affairs of the country as a whole. Kind of like the dumb farm animals they act like. Or maybe give them one-way tickets to a country that more closely lives by the laws they seem to like...which is fine, but they have no business trying to force the rest of us to live by them.

That's my only real problem with these people.

Believe what you want...just don't force others to live under YOUR rules just because they're in YOUR Holy Book.

21. To understand it, you have to understand religion. And I don't fucking get religion at all.
So I can't explain it to you.

I think these people are fucking morons who have completely lost their ability to reason.

22. People who are 'religious' are fear filled and controlled
By the church. I know a really nice black lady who is 90 years old who wouldn't hurt a fly yet when her pastor outed himself she left the congregation because she couldn't 'condone' homosexuality even though she liked the pastor.

'Religious' people, meaning those who haven't yet been able to overcome indoctrination, are afraid of being punished by God. They feel that their very salvation depends on obeying God's word no matter what the cost. If it were God's word that they must accept homosexuality they would do without any trouble.
