Europe cell phone study focuses on tumors

LYON, France, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A European study suggests people using cell phones for 10 or more years have a higher risk of developing brain tumors than do non-cell phone users.

The five-nation study involving more than 4,500 people found a statistically significant increase in the incidence of tumors on the side of the head where the users hold their cell phones, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

"Although our results overall do not indicate an increased risk of glioma in relation to mobile phone use, the possible risk in the most heavily exposed part of the brain with long-term use needs to be explored further before firm conclusions can be drawn," the researchers said.

The study covering the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland is to be published next month in the International Journal of Cancer.

The research is part of a larger 13-nation research program coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, the newspaper reported. Results from all 13 countries are expected to be analyzed and made public later this year. The United States is not included in the research.

1. Oh yes, this is why I have never owned a cell phone. Years before...
...cell phones were available, I was taking a HAM radio class. We were extensively warned about the dangers of being too close to transmitting antennas. Of course they were very big antennas, you could actually be physically burned by touching/being close to very large ones. But years later, when I started to see cell phones become ubiquitous I started to wonder...is there a difference here, except for scale? I didn't think so. Still don't.

3. I always did have that thought in the back of my head! Hopefully it does not move to the side!
I mean seriously a few years ago there were nervous dateline reports etc with scinetist saying nothing to fear just like in Manhattan when the Bush EPA and Giuliani said "It's Ok the air is good don't worry!

4. Finally!! There is justice!!!
Early adapters of cell phone use were invariably asshats that would walk around shouting into the damn things regardless of people near them. Then they became the ubiquitious attatchement to valley-girl types that forced you to listen to these one-side drivel fountains:

Val: HEY GIRL! I'M OUTTA CLASS NOW... ARE YOU OUTA CLASS TOO?

:pause:

Val: Omigah!! Did she finally get up?? Did you tell her that guy was banging her after she passed out? That was so totally....like.....date rape "N I grossed out and left after watching them a'while..

:pause:

Val: Of course I'm not gonna tell her who....because he's my boyfriends roomate thas why.....hey her problem.

:pause:

Val: Oh there you are... I see you...well gotta go bye!!

Of course the men are no better. Just smaller vocabularies.

Val Guy: Dude!! No WAY dude! DUUUUde!! That is so SICK!!! dude. Ok dude bye.

Yep brain tumours are just about what they deserve.

6. Just because someone annoys you
Doesn't mean they deserve a brain tumor. That sort of thinking strays dangerously close to the mind of George W. Bush.

7. And I've heard guys in business conferences while on the toilet
Business guy from next stall: Yeah. Yeah. We'll have the final draft out this Thursday. I'll have Mike in finance look at it.

:pause: :fart: :plink plink:

That is just wrong.

8. Yeah, that may say more about the phones
Cell phones from ten years ago put out WAY more radiation, iianm, than the ones now.

I like these kinds of studies, though, because I hate talking on the phone, and this gives me another excuse not to.
