Since the documentary he starred in, "An Inconvenient Truth," won an Academy Award, speculation has only increased about Al Gore's potential entry into the presidential race. He is not taking any overt steps toward running, and that may be the cleverest strategy of all. A Democratic strategist sent Gore a memo sometime ago suggesting he announce, but forgo the traditional campaign trail and continue promoting the cause of global warming. He would be the nonpolitical candidate. Word came back: Gore isn't running. But in fact he is. Whether it results in an official run depends on what the field looks like six months from now. Laurie David, who helped bankroll Gore's film, and whose "personal fantasy" is that he run, says that when she presses him, he's always coy and says his cell phone is breaking up. "I believe him when he says he doesn't have any intention of running," David told NEWSWEEK. "But I also believe the door is not completely shut."

1. 6 months from now is too late. And Gore has made it clear he's doing an end run around the political

system to address the issue closest to his heart- the Environment.

He's uses the speculation about his running to garner interest in his Environmental work.

I think he is trying to see what the field will be like, that he is actually protecting himself from the infighting and the smears that occur when a candidate announces and that he will have a hard time ignoring the call to run if it is as loud as it appears.

The issue closest to his heart is not just the environment, it is this nation. He is a patriot and if he believes his service in office is needed he will be hard pressed not to run.

Also, if the cry of the masses is that he run, it will be difficult for the criminals to steal yet another election from him and the people.

12. I think he'll run if he believes the likely primary winner won't be a good president.

He is a patriot but if the likely candidate looks like s/he can do the job as well as he could, Al Gore might keep on doing what he is doing now which is crucial in it's own right. Al Gore is very smart about whole systems, seeing the big picture. As long as key players are in key positions everybody can work together to achieve the goals.
I'll trust whomever he backs, especially if he decides to back himself :)

5. As president, he could do much more for the issues he cares most about. It

may be that he won't run (lots of reasons not to), but I don't buy the line that he's not running because he feels he can do more as a citizen for the global warming issue.

I hope he runs. We need his focus, honesty, interest in environment, experience, kindness, and intelligence. I can't think of a better candidate.

6. Just a reminder

that a virtually unknown Bill Clinton got into the race in the fall prior to primary and carried the nomination for the DEMS. It can be done and hey, he does have a few things to put in motion before he shifts his attention to the presidential race.

This is perhaps why he has enlisted a few thousand people to carry his message/his powerpoint to the masses around the country and the world this year. He is not (and practically CANNOT be) the sole person responsible for fixing the environmental mess we find ourselves in. As president, he will have a lot more clout... can't wait to campaign for him.

11. It Was Different 16 Years Ago

then, a candidate could get into the game late and stand a reasonable chance. But now, the primaries are so "front loaded" - there used to be several weeks between the New Hampshire primary and the rest of the country. Super Tuesday was in March. Bill Clinton didn't really secure the nomination until April, the 1992 field was still fairly competitive up until that point.

But, a lot of states wanted more of a say in the process. We were jealous of Iowa and New Hampshire getting all of the attention. And after 2004, when Kerry pretty much secured the nomination before half the states had their primaries, a lot of us are right ticked that we had no say in it. States are feeling left out, so they started moving their primaries forward, earlier.

This is going to favor candidates who can raise a lot of money and get a lot of media attention. California is February 5 - that's two weeks after N.H.

Sadly, this whole attempt to give more power to more people actually gives more power to big business and the media as candidates need to compete in large media outlets early.

Of course, if anyone can get into this late and pull off a victory, it's Al Gore. He's already well known and well respected. But I don't think we can really expect some one to come out of left field in October and get the nomination. The nomination will be sewn up by Valentine's Day in practicality if not fact.

He'd be the first President to enter office with all 3.
