A fiercely loyal, longtime DUer just passed away
Edited on Sun Mar-18-07 11:34 AM by niceypoo
Her DU name was, "erma," and she has been a member since 2001. Her full name was, Erma Knox. She is the one who originally turned me on to the Democratic Underground. She never posted a single thread or comment in six years, though she read the threads and articles here religiously the whole time she was a member. She spent a couple hours a day, minimum, reading threads here. She knows all of you by name. She was African American, and I am Caucasian. She was my sister in laws mother. I became good friends with her while doing maintenance on her PC. We joked that she was my, "Mother in law, in law." Everything in her life since january 2001 has revolved around seeing Bush out the door. She donated to the DU, and many democratic candidates. Her television was always on CSPAN and her radio was always on air america. She lived and breathed politics to the point of driving others around her crazy (those in her family who are less politically inclined). Of course, being quite political myself, we got along swimmingly. She was diagnosed with hepatitis C back in the 90s. She could have gotten it from a transfusion, or one of her ex husbands, she didn't know. She first went onto the transplant list back in the late 90s but went into remission in 2000. She was sick off and on since then. She swore to me that she would not die until, "That mother fucker (Bush) is held to account for his crimes." We joked that, if she did die, she would scratch and claw her way out of the ground to see that asshat go on trial. She did civil rights work back in the 1960s. Her recent political positions were largely rooted in fear, for the future of her grandkids. Once the democrats won last November, she changed. She became more relaxed and at ease and retrospective. By that time she was on the transplant list again, and was bloated from water buildup in her body. She took herself off of the list last December because she was told she had to go to AA meetings for 90 days before she would be given a liver. She flatly refused because she didn't drink. She had decided that Bush would finally pay for his misdeeds and she was tired of being sick all of the time. I last spoke to her on friday after the plame hearings which she watched with very, very much satisfaction. She died last night about 1:15 AM. I will miss you Erma.

but I remember that name. I wonder how many "Erma's" there are on DU who don't post and I wonder why they don't.

May God rest her soul, she saw some of her wish come true.

155. I never post, but I read daily
I joined DU in April (I think) of 2001. As you can see from my post total, I never post. However, DU is my primary source of news, and I spend 2-4 hours here every day.

As to why I don't post...I do most of my browsing at work between activities requiring my attention. And while my work doesn't mind which websites I visit (within reason), they would frown upon spending work time actively participating in an online forum. Not to mention the fact that there are so many excellent posters here that I don't feel I really have much to add.

erma. I'm so sorry for your loss and her family.
HepC is a disease that is being ignored, many have it and don't even know until their are symptoms. My son was diagnosed in June and is having the treatment for it now. It's expensive and difficult, without insurance it's out of reach for most.

34. I sit here with my mouth agape.
My jaw just dropped and stayed there. Bless you and Erma. The world just got smaller for me. To know Erma was here the whole time. I'm torn that I'll never get to know her. But now I do know she was here. And now that I think of it, maybe still here. There is a world of Ermas. I would say most of us are Ermas. We all care. Only that small fraction who have been indoctrinated into the darkness of evil that don't care. Or don't know how. I hope it's not impolite to say these things. I'm just finding it hard to say how I feel. A sadness. A longing. An optimism to know she was here.

I am very lucky. This morning I have been invited to go on a ride through the forest with a group. I've never met these people, but the one man. And I've never been through this part of the forest before. It's like an unknown journey. I will take the thought of Erma with me. In her honor.

Make Me Brave for Life
God, make me brave for life: oh, braver than this.
Let me straighten after pain, as a tree straightens after the rain,
Shining and lovely again.
God, make me brave for life; much braver than this.
As the blown grass lifts, let me rise
From sorrow with quiet eyes,
Knowing Thy way is wise.
God, make me brave, life brings
Such blinding things.
Help me to keep my sight;
Help me to see aright
That out of dark comes light.

El Maley Rachamim
God full of mercy who dwells on high
Grant perfect rest on the wings of Your Divine Presence
In the lofty heights of the holy and pure
who shine as the brightness of the heavens
to the soul of erma.
who has gone to her eternal rest
as all her family and friends
pray for the elevation of her soul.
Her resting place shall be in the Garden of Eden.
Therefore, the Master of mercy will care for her
under the protection of His wings for all time
And bind her soul in the bond of everlasting life.
God is her inheritance and she will rest in peace
and let us say Amen.

Rest in peace, Erma! We are carrying on! It's a long, long road back to democracy, but we are on it now. Your spirit remains with us, through "Niceypoo," who has posted your story and your passion for change, and will now be promulgated by this great democratic medium, and will ripple through peoples' consciousness, constantly reminding us how this one person--this one American patriot--despite all her woes, cared so much about our country, and worried so much about it, and, like the rest of us, was heartened by the explosion of democracy and dissent that DU represents.

I can so relate. This is where I came just after Nov. 2, 2004, and joined the Election Forum, to understand what really happened--and found out! It was so important to me, during those dark days. Other people cared, too. Other people were seeking the truth--even if truth seeking was shut down everywhere else.

We're going to get him, Erma! We're going to get that mother fucker and hold him and to account for his crimes--and bust through the blockade of our own unfortunately compromised leaders--and we're going to do more than that. We are going to transform this country, and turn it back into the good country that it was meant to be, a country free of militarism, lawlessness and fascist policy, a country free of global corporate predators, a country that stands for justice and fairness. And this road began here, for many of us, here at DU, where we realized that WE are the majority.

61. They do that to people who are depressed and suicidal
You have to sit there and listen to smug bastards tell you that you deserve to die because you don't believe in their God.

And if you are in pain because of a medical condition, tough shit, you need to let go and let God.

I'd rather die behind the chemical shed. These fucking 12-step cultist assholes need to be neutralized before they kill more innocent people.

Isn't there something in the Hippocratic Oath about doing no
harm, nor doing anything that would cause death? The Oath is a bit antiquated, but I think there are still some time honored ideals here that even the ancient Greeks recognized.

Mostly, no one should be refused medical treatment because of their past actions, even if that past may have caused the disease in question. Although there is a chance that a liver transplant patient might still drink afterwards, if that's what caused it, it's more likely they will consider the gift of a second chance to change their ways. I believe statistics might show this is true.

This reminds me of those doctors and nurses back when AIDS was first recognized, who didn't want to treat AIDS patients because they were gay.

111. I don't think they follow the oath anymore. Not for some people.
HCV isn't the same hepatitis cause by drinking. It's a virus. I'm sure drinking before, during, or after a liver transplant isn't good for anyone including someone HCV+. They just assumed she had a drinking/drug problem and deny her treatment based on that. Why didn't they believe her when she said she didn't drink? I would hope that the oath would cover everyone. I don't know if they take that oath too seriously these days. Or they warp it to fit their own perverted ideas.

There is so much stigma and prejudice that this disease carries with it. I'm very upset that it killed erma even though I didn't know her.

120. Wrongful death lawsuits
Enough of those, and states will catch on that it's not in their best interest to validate any of their employees' religious dogmas at the expense of the health and well-being of a potential payer of taxes and consumer of goods.

That could be a start.

72. I couldn't believe I read that, either
1) This just in: There are reasons one might need a liver transplant that have nothing whatsoever to do with alcoholism, Hep C being among them.

2) What if you don't have 90 days before you need the transplant? Or are too sick to go to the meetings?

3) AA is a faith-based program. So basically, in order to get a liver, you must also receive a higher power.

4) Do they make you quit smoking before they'll operate on lung cancer? :eyes:

:grr:

A DUer's wife died recently, in Indiana, I think, because the health care system let her down, too.

I can't imagine having to sit through AA meetings and listening to peoples "war stories" about drugging and drinking to get a liver transplant. It pisses me off that they think everyone who has HCV is an addict. Of course the Bush CDC is trying to further the myth, not expel it. :grr:

95. That was the outstanding
part of the OP, to me. She took herself off of the list. She chose death over being forced into AA meetings (with all its implications).

There was a time when the sick where treated with love and compassion. Now we look for ways to blame people for their illness. We punish and humiliate them.

Nothing like killing the spirit when it's the only healthy part left.

I myself do not post much either. Like me, she may have been intimidated by the brilliance that abounds here. Many posts are so elegantly argued, you feel you have nothing to add to the debate. I have a suspicion that erma could have added a great deal and just failed to recognize it.

She feels like a kindred spirit to me. May she rest in peace and bless you for posting this.

Hon, I think you are part of Erma's voice. Your Erma did something as good or better than posting here - she brought you to DU. That was her speaking, volumes! The DUers that lurk but don't speak are a part of the DU gestalt, albeit a quiet part. She sounds like a special woman - how wonderful that you had the chance to know her!

The celestial kingdom must be full of souls who know the truth about Bush and Cheney. I hope she meets my dad and my friend Jeannette. There must be a lot of unrest on the other side, God's side. How fucking infuriating! That shouldn't have been done to her. We need better laws for dealing with this disease. People shouldn't be treated this way if they don't have a drinking problem and perhaps even if they do. She wouldn't have made the 90 days. They didn't want to give her a liver. What if a match came at 78.5 days? This is so tragic and wrong. I hope congress can find to time to deal with this disease. There is no support out there for us. NONE! :grr:

118. Just for HCV+ people.
I've heard of 60 day, twice a week, with random drug tests. Any fuck-ups and your off the list. Sounds like being on probation. Yes, your a criminal if you are HCV+. Fucking guilty even if you've never drank or did drugs. Even if you got it from a transfusion. The thing that pisses me off too is that if someone wants to get some relief by using medical marijuana that would take them off the transplant list. If they stay on the list they still may die before there is ever a liver. Then they would've died a much more painful death than is necessary. :grr:

It's time to Decriminalize HCV.

To get listed many or most places make you do that. Not to long ago some places required it for those just getting the non-transplant interfuron/riba treatment. I don't think they are doing that any more. Some place still may be.

I'm so ashamed of our country to force an old woman to take the blame for something she didn't do (by forcing her to go to AA!) in order to get needed medical treatment.

But if she was a DUer she was family. Good journey to you departed one.

147. niceypoo, you wrote a touching epitaph for Erma
Edited on Sun Mar-18-07 07:29 PM by Duppers
What a great lady she was.

I'm also angry that she was told that she had to go to AA meetings when she did not drink. Sounds like a way out of treating her, imo. My cousin has had hepatitis C for over 20 yrs. but he's has gotten the very best treatment available. He got it from infected blood given to him during an operation at one of the best medical schools in the country. The med school took responsibility and have since taken care of him. Dear Erma would still be alive had she the same treatment, I suspect.

Glad to hear she made it until she had heard the news that the infection in Washington DC is being exposed.

Take care, Niceypoo. Thank you so much for letting us know.
