So who DID review the USAs and find them underperforming?

Even if we were to take at face value Gonzales's "shocked, shocked" version of events re Sampson -- that the AG really didn't know what his chief of staff was doing -- then a fundamental question remains unanswered:

With whom at the Department of Justice did Gonzales consult in coming up with the list of the eight U.S. attorneys to be tossed? Was this listmaking delegated solely to Sampson or not? If Sampson was in charge of all of this, did Gonzales ever ask Sampson, say, well why exactly are these the underperformers? Or did he just take it on faith that his chief of staff had done the spadework to unearth those with inadequate performances?

1. I don't think the Ken Lay excuse is going to work for Gonzo any
better than it worked for Kenny Boy! Just in listening to the various comments on this morning's talk shows, I have the feeling the WH is going to protect Harriett and throw Gonzo under the bus. No comments in particular, just all of them collectively.

2. I suspect that Paul J. McNulty had a hand in it.
He was promoted last March from U.S. Attorney in the rocket docket in Virginia to Deputy Attorney General. He is known as a FIXER for the Bushies. He was instrumental in the Florida recount. He testified before Congress about the attorneys and is one of those accused of giving false information.
