To the Editor,

I want to take a step back from my usual political rants, and share a moment of beauty. I was driving down I-20 in downtown Dallas when I observed two well-dressed African-American men on the side of the road. One had his arm around a haggard, elderly homeless man who was resting his head on the well-dressed man’s shoulder. The other man was holding a Burger King bag and a drink, offering it to the man. In our busy lives, we forget what being a member of the human race means, regardless of your religion, or lack of. We must look after the weakest, the least of us. Our poor, our sick, our children, our elderly — they define us as a country. I am grateful to these men for reminding me why I so vocally voice my dissent, why I became a Democrat after years as a Libertarian. We are defined by the treatment of those who have the least - not those who have the most.

I was on an errand for work and I passed by that man I'd given $5 to previously. He was making his way down the road on his cane in the rain. I had an instant impulse to offer him a ride to where he was going and give him some money for a meal or something but since I was on the clock I didn't do it. I've been mentally kicking myself in the backside ever since.

7. Society should operate this way.

We need to share with the least of us to see that they get the basic necessities of life to exist. When we don't do this, we have disease epidemics, crimes and wars. It only makes sense to be socially responsible if not for compassion, for the good of society as a whole.

15. fwiw-I did ask a couple of the nurses I work with about that...

who happen to be African-American...if they found that offensive...and their response was no...what they found offensive was that it would be assumed the men were white if I hadn't written that.I actually only pointed that out because I wanted those men to know that I had seen their kindness and appreciated it.
