Woman who stole baby in Texas had two miscarriages and wanted a baby for "years"....
She's only 21!!! Not exactly at the end of her reproductive rope!

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/1110AP_Infant_Abducted_Profile.html

For years, one thing had controlled Rayshaun Parson's dreams, behavior and sometimes even her body, those who know her say - a baby of her own.

It was an obsession that some say included a so-called phantom pregnancy - a rare medical phenomenon in which women who aren't pregnant experience physical and emotional changes similar to those of expectant mothers. It continued through two miscarriages and a difficult breakup with a boyfriend.

:wtf: :wtf:

1. It said the last miscarriage was at 6 or 7 months
I thought it was called a stillbirth at that point.

I can't even imagine. Yes she's young, but that's got to be hard to deal with at any age.

She needs psychiatric help maybe. She could well be suffering from depression after what happened to her.

3. This is the logical outcome for some women in a society that
teaches them that their only value is as a mother of children (when they're not being a dutiful, obedient spouse).

Pronatalism run amok.

16. Haven't you ever noticed the anti-woman, pro-natalist tendencies
of the RELIGIOUS RIGHT?????

Women are mere vessels, whose sole purpose is to obey men and pump out babies.

9. Sort of
It's the logical outcome when someone is trying to define themselves as an adult and not finding success in any other arena. I've seen men father a bunch of children attempting to do the same thing.

11. It's also a "passages" thing for some - Immediate Adulthood.
Edited on Sun Mar-18-07 05:50 PM by TahitiNut
Altogether too many "parents" narcissistically regard themselves as somehow entitled to a superior status ... and tell their kids that too often as some perverted sense of "discipline."

4. Yea, I know. Seems totally bizarre. She is a very young woman.
Phantom pregnancy was in 2002. She is 21 now, which would mean that so-called phantom pregnancy was when she was 16.

7. Seems like authorities would have to find that help for her, since
she is charged with kidnapping.

it leads to a lot of things but not necessarily help.

10. She stole a sick baby. She needs jail.
If she got therapy/drugs etc, and suddenly realized "Hey- it's wrong to steal other people's babies", that doesn't absolve her. She should go to jail, for a long time.

13. I don't have my handkerchief out either....
She stole a newborn and went to another state! We are much safer with her behind bars. What a horrible experience for the infants mother and family. She may always fear her child will be taken.....She is the one who needs our support.

I feel terrible for the whole family. What a terrifying thing to happen. But I feel bad for this young woman who is obviously not well also.

24. I agree.

There is a lot of sadness in the world and I'm glad this kidnapping didn't lead to a child's death. I hope all involved can recover emotionally from this.

30. Good point - I agree
We can have concern for the family, the baby and the troubled woman who kidnapped her. I would say she needs serious mental health treatment, not jail.

22. To start with
My guess is that she had no idea that this child was sick.
There is really no way to detect hyperbilirubinemia in babies simply by looking.
It is harder to detect in darker babies.
She has a mental illness. That needs to be treated and personally I would be fine with putting this woman on house arrest and electronically monitored. With psychiatric help, she shouldn't present an ongoing danger to the public.

25. No way to tell the baby was sick? Hmm. Maybe that's
one of the reason people shouldn't steal babies from hospitals-cause these people have no clue if those babies are sick and in need or medical intervention. Just an idea.

26. Well that is the obvious answer
However, in a court of law any decent attorney can have the fact that the baby was sick thrown out. It wasn't obvious.
Arguably any newborn can have life-threatening problems. Sometimes murmurs don't show up right away. Sometimes they have problems holding their temperatures. Sometimes they have intestinal blockages. There is an entire myriad of problems with newborns.
But I was just addressing the issue that the OP brought up about stealing a "sick" newborn.

18. People do some strange things
When my oldest daughter was a baby, I briefly shared an apartment with a friend who loved kids. She was always talking about how she was sure she could never have kids of her own for various reasons (not really sure what now - this was 25 years ago). Both of us were only 19 or 20 years old yet she was convinced she was infertile.

Later, after we no longer lived together, I went to pick up my daughter at her babysitter's and was told this girl had been there earlier, wanting to take the baby "for the afternoon." She claimed that I'd okayed it but since the babysitter knew nothing about it, she (thankfully) didn't let her.

I discovered not long after that that my daughter's original birth certificate was missing and the only conclusion I could reach was that this girl had taken it and was going to take the baby as well. Other things she'd done made me think it was likely.

A couple of years later, she married and ended up having SIX kids of her own.

She was a whacked out girl...

21. There is actually an infant abductor profile that we watch out for
Abductor Profile
The typical abductor:

· Is usually an overweight female, ages 14 – 48, average age of 28 years.

· Has planned the abduction, but selection of the target is typically random and opportunistic.

· May seem emotionally immature, suffer from low self-esteem, and have a history of manipulative behavior.

· Usually has no criminal record or may have non-violent offenses such as shop lifting, forgery, or check fraud.

· May have a history of miscarriages or infertility.

· May have previously "faked" being pregnant, or be presenting herself as being pregnant.

· Usually is married or co-habitating, and the relationship is frequently troubled or strained.

· May be attempting to "save the relationship" by abducting a child.

· Usually targets an infant/child of the same race.

· Usually acts alone, but may have a "partner" who will create a distraction to lure staff away from the target.

27. This woman was my worst nightmare while my babies were in the
hospital. I would have literally lost my mind if she had kidnapped one of my newborn twins.

She is obviously mentally ill, but my compassion for her is seriously tempered by the strong urge to throttle her!

Perhaps once my hormones calm down I can view her with more sympathy. I went through eight years of infertility hell myself, and three miscarriages.

Nope. Touch my newborn, and face the wrath of a mother!

My twins are 22 days old today. I'd probably have tried to kill her, once my baby was back safely in my arms. Best to keep her away from the family of the babe she stole away during those precious first days....Grrr.....

28. Congrats on your babies Ida
I was wondering how you were doing.
This particular hospital has one of the best security systems in place.
The problem was the breach of security.
They need to figure out how that happened.
The good news is that most hospitals have foolproofed their security.
Again, congratulations on your new ones.

29. Thank you, Horse!
Our babies had "hugs" tags on their legs (once they were out of the incubators), which would set off an alarm if the baby was removed from the "secure" section of the hospital. When we checked out, they "de-activated" the alarm on a computer, and then cut the tags off. I found myself wondering how to 'circumvent' the security system myself a few times -- it didn't seem that difficult to look innocent while sneaking a baby out....During the entire pregnancy and the last month (where I was at the hospital daily either as a patient, or a parent visiting the NICU) I *never* saw the desk where the security tags were monitored left unmanned (which made me feel a little safer, until the magic scissors came out to "cut" the tag free -- and then I realized that it would have gone off if it hadn't been de-activated first).
