What's with the "I Regret My Abortion" bumper stickers?
I've seen a couple just recently...one in Madison, WI if you can believe that.

Are they going to turn themselves in to go to jail since that's what they want to happen to other women?

18. Nor do I if they are just expressing regret
I suppose you'd have to talk to each one to find out where they stand on the law. I personally know one woman who has had an abortion and believes it should be illegal now. She justifies hers by claiming that she was "manipulated" into it.

If it's non-whites or underprivileged folk of any color, well, they should have thought about that before they spread their legs. That fetus is God's will! But if the daughter of some rich ass hole WASP in Westchester gets knocked up, well, surely she shouldn't pay for the rest of her life for one childish mistake.

23. Well, I regret my first marriage, but feel no need to post it on my car
which, it seems to me, would be an effort to warn others not to get married...

I'm not making light of the issue of abortion, but the reason to post it on a car isn't to "express regret," it's to dissuade others. Yes, it's free speech and yes, it's their right. But it's about influencing others, not just announcing their feelings, ya know?

Or any other bumper sticker with a left wing message on it? It's your right to put in your car whatever you want, even if your intention is to get people to think about something.

Maybe I believe in free speech too much.

5. So what?
If they want to have those bumper stickers, it's fine.

I'm pro-choice in the complete sense of the term: if you want to have an abortion done, fine. It's your problem. If you don't, or if you did and regret it now, it's your problem as well. Both sides should feel free to be vocal about it.

Let every men and women make their own choices about their bodies and, in the case of women, pregnancies. And let them live with the consequences as well. Not the government's problem.

I agree it's free speech
I just saw a disgusting anti-choice show on late night cable access. The host (who used to be an anchor on the ABC affiliate) kept referring to the guests as "post-abortive". Nice. Anyway, the guest kept saying that the providers gave them only the choice of abortion, to which I screamed at my TV "bullshit."

Oh, and they had this doctor as some sort of expert on and he was introduced as a "previous abortion provider." He talked about the invasive nature of abortions and then said that he had more than one patient who went home to experience physical trauma and discomfort resulting in some "tissue leaking onto the couch, to which many would find a tiny arm among the blood." Whatever!

Why do they feel the need to publically let all the world know that they regret a supposed "sin?"

"Me thinks" such public pronouncements are less about assuaging some sense of guilt and more about some need for public attention...

that the driver had (or had not) had an abortion, had committed or not committed nor considered committing any particular "sin." The parallel to a Pro-Choice sticker would be a sticker that said Anti-abortion.... Just a political statement, nothing more..

Quite different, Katz... I'm not saying they don't have the right at all.. Just asking WHY?

... or back-alley abortionist when it wasn't safe and legal. At least the ones with bumper stickers are alive to feel regret - a 'conveniently' self-serving attitude (cake and eat it too?) that ignores the plight of the unwanted children. Better to be alive and regret one's own choice than to live a life of misery and hardship dictated by the 'choice' of others.

43. Anything's possible. No doubt some people have felt regret...
Whether advertising the fact makes them feel better or it's empty politics, who knows? Either way, it's not the most intelligent thing to do and here's why:

They're advertising they had one and every abortion-center-bomber will doubtlessly be on the lookout for them. Which is damn scary if you ask me; they're psycho enough to blow up buildings with people in them, so it wouldn't surprise me if they went after anybody, remorseful or not, who had one.

You regret it . . .AND? The implication is that they regret it and therefore they think other people shouldn't be able to have abortions. If they regret it and want to join a support group or having counseling or whatever helps them with that, fine. But they shouldn't be trying to change the law because of their own personal responses to that choice. Many many women have abortions and never regret it.

51. These women might want to think twice about proclaiming their
actions so loudly. After all, there is no statute of limitations on murder, which is what the RW considers abortion to be.

If Roe v Wade is overturned and abortion is legally murder, there might be records of who had those bumper stickers, being turned over to the authorities by certain vigilant citizens. I hope no DUers would be meanspirited enough to do that.

or any bumper sticker. YES, it is a person's right to put whatever bumper sticker they want on their car. Why they do it is a mystery to me.

I choose to express myself by having a clean and shiny car minus the $3.00 bumper sticker expressing my point of view that nobody gives a damn about anyway.

A bumper sticker saying "I regret my abortion" is really a helluva a lot more information than I want about a stranger. But, that's life.

Part of the way they assuage their guilt is to make it more difficult for others to (in their minds) make the same mistake.

I don't agree with it, but I understand it having gone through it myself. And no, it isn't easy to admit, and I'm amazed that anyone would have the guts to put that on their car because it is asking for criticism from both sides of the issue, pro-choice and anti-choice.

added on edit: Need to try to clarify that I'm not and never have been anti-choice, but I am pro-choice, pro-life and pro-woman. Some people don't understand how it's possible to be all three.
