Toronto Sun: Elephant runs out of room
Elephant runs out of room
Expect years in wilderness as Republicans seek new path to power -- just like our right

By CHRISTINA BLIZZARD, TORONTO SUN

Last Updated: 9th November 2008, 3:58am

In the wake of the drubbing Barack Obama and the Democrats handed the Republicans last Tuesday night, the right south of the border may need to look to Canada's decade-long struggle to re-unite the right to get back on track.

In Kim Campbell's disastrous 1993 election outing, the right in Canada split, with the Reform party taking their old seats in the west. Campbell herself was defeated in her Vancouver riding and the PC Party won only two seats in the east.

The political "right" is not a monolith. It is a diverse and complex animal.

Within the GOP, there are your John McCain-type Republicans, who are fiscal conservatives, pro-big business, pro-small government, serve your country, pragmatic types.

And there are the Sarah Palin social conservatives, who appeal to the religious right -- or in the new parlance, "Wal-Mart Republicans."

(Palin, meanwhile, seems to have been more at home in up-market stores like Neiman Marcus than Wal-Mart.)

The party of Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Dwight Eisenhower -- and yes, even Ronald Reagan -- now has to appease a core of voters that is represented by Palin, a woman who couldn't even describe what the vice-president of the U.S. does.

The strategy in recruiting her was, presumably, to make the McCain ticket more palatable to the born again, evangelical heartland that elected George W. Bush.

This is similar to the two solitudes of conservatism that kept Tories out of power in Ottawa from Campbell's rout to Harper's first minority government in 2006. .......(more)

1. The Elephant is still in the room: Ghost Detainees, torture victims, dead Iraqis, nukes proliferated
and the $1.14 QUADRILLION dollar timebomb, for which there is not enough money on planet Earth to prevent a worldwide collapse of all currencies:
