Poll question: What do you think is most likely, if you saw a "I reget my abortion" bumper sticker?

Poll inspired by a GD thread here. It struck me as a "duh" that people with such bumper stickers have overwhelmingly-likely NOT had an abortion. Not that people who have abortions can't regret it - certainly that may happen. It just seems unlikely IN THE EXTREME to me that damn near anyone who's had an abortion would go out of their way to publicize it.

But I'm curious whether or not my default thought REALLY IS a "duh", or if it's just a "duh" to me.

Not that it matters but she votes liberal democrat on every issue except abortion.......She became pro life about 5 years ago. And no to answer the obvious question, she is not an evangelical, in fact she isn't christian at all, she is Hindu........

21. She had the abortion shortly after, she got married at 25 to a nice guy. She is 36 now, at about age 31 or 32 (I don't exactly remember) she said that she had realized that the abortion she got at 21 was wrong and that she was a "murderer". We are an accepting loving family so we accepted this from here, even while we kept our own separate beliefs. In five years I have never asked for an explanation as she doesn't have to give me one. Maybe at our next family get together (we live thousands of miles apart) I'll ask her.

Honestly, I don't know why, but I saw this thread and wanted to chip in that I had seen someone with this sticker.......

I've wondered if some of them had abortions at a young age where they didn't want or couldn't handle the responsibility of a child and didn't want friends or family to know they were pregnant- years later were unable to conceive on purpose and THEN wished they'd had the baby. Just a thought.

Hard to put a complex thought into a subject line, isn't it?

What I mean to say is this: Women are legitimately entitled to their own feelings about a decision, whether it be sheer relief or whether it be grief and regret that they had to do it given the circumstances of their lives.

What's so very sad is that since Roe vs. Wade the fundies have made it their business to identify abortion as an act of terrible sin -- murder, even -- regardless of the circumstances, and to make sure every woman gets that message pounded into her heart.

And in reaction to that, feminists and other pro-choice people have hardened their hearts and denied that the conceptus is anything more than a clump of cells. I don't think the pro-choice camp would have come up with that stance if it hadn't been for the public and radical nature of the anti-choice campaign.

Neither side is entirely right or entirely wrong in this. As any woman knows, pregnancy is a state of mind as well as a state of body, and it has ramifications for the whole of her life: her spouse/boyfriend, her finances, her other children if any, her health, and on and on and on.

My visceral reaction to such a bumper sticker declaration is "ugh." My spiritual reaction is sadness, not just for her but for all of us.

My point is that some people here seem to have issues with such bumper stickers, and I have to wonder why. The intentions of the person with such bumper sticker should not even be important. It's not important if the person even had an abortion or not. It's just that the person, for whatever reason, wants to put that sticker on the car, and we are in a free country and everyone can put any sort of stuff on their car if they want to.

It is a non-issue in my view, and it seems like some people do have issues with those freakin' bumper stickers. There is no reason to.

The OP was simply asking our opinion about a bumper sticker. The OP suggested nothing about not allowing someone to have the bumper sticker. So if no one was talking about taking away someone's freedom of speech, why do you keep posting about Freedom of Speech? That is a legitimate question.

Perhaps it's some neurological disorder? A type of aphasia? "Freedom of Speech, I ate a peach, it's a hot day at the beach." How/why else would it have even made sense to SQUAWK about freedom of speech if no one else was talking about taking that freedom from someone? Must be aphasia.

ownership of the car is not the point. It's about the insincerity of using a bumper sticker about a completely personal, private and genuine event that's being discussed. I would completely accept a women saying this to me in a one on one conversation; I completely doubt the sincerity of someone who would put that on their car bumper. Not many women who've gone through such an important event would advertise that they did because of the backlash and repercussion from dolts, even though they may harbor intense regret for doing it.

I don't doubt in many cases it would be a woman who had an abortion, then found religion and did regret it. Or maybe regretted it and through that found religion. It's a choice women need to come to on their own - I knew a girl in high school whose parents "strongly encouraged" her to have an abortion. She wouldn't have made that choice on her own and might very well regret it now and she might be the sort who would have a sticker like that. But I agree that women in that position seem less than likely to want the fact that they've had an abortion written on the back of their car.

On the other hand, it could be just another anti-abortion activist trying to get attention.

Until the day she died when she was 84 years old. She had it back in the day when it was illegal, but she was a middle class, middle aged, faithfully married, grandmother, who didn't want any more children.

There are websites with stories about women who are out on picket lines in front of abortion clinics, and then suddenly when they get pregnant, all of a sudden they decide that they need an abortion, but nobody else should have one.
