Please tell him about charging soldiers for uniforms when injured....
And, about charging the soldiers for meals eaten in the hospital, after they've been injured. My partner simply doesn't believe me when I tell him about reading these stories. Can you guys help me out here, so I can point him to the stories?

Thanks.

5. Paying for meals while in the hospital
When the Army pays your monthly salary, if you're entitled to Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS), you get money for all your meals whether you eat in the mess hall, McDonald's, or a hospital. The soldiers always have the option of a "meal card" and getting all their meals free, but they typically prefer BAS since they can use their money to eat when and where they like.

I've never heard of a soldier paying for a meal out of their own pocket unless they were being reimbursed with BAS. The historic origins of the military allow room and board (or rations) as part of a member's pay, but not double board.

It sounds like there was just a misunderstanding on how this allowance works.
