10. Well, I was actually trying to see if anyone had any comments
Edited on Sun Mar-18-07 08:54 PM by Texas Explorer
on the symbolism of the placement of the flag. I believe the customary display view of the US flag is thus:

But as displayed in the House chamber, if you were to turn the flag into a horizontal position to the right the flag would be a mirror image of the above image. If you turn it to the left, it's upside down. Which means the "back" of the flag is the side that is facing the viewer.

Combined with the fasces, I was just wondering if there is symbolism to found there if I should simply loosen the strap on my tinfoil hat.

16. That's what I'm getting at. Why is it displayed veritcally? And

backwards? I looked at SOTU speeches as far back as Kennedy and it has always been displayed that way and I wonder if there is some symbolism to be drawn fron it.

It is reminisent of the large flags hung vertically on monolithic buildings in the old Soviet Union.

Edited to add: I realize what you are saying is that, because is is hung vertically, and following the upper left corner rule, that in your view it is being displayed properly. Perhaps my tinfoil hat is a bit too tight.

17. Loosen those straps...
The blue background/stars are always upper left to the viewer (when only one side of the flag is visible).

20. Why would I have comment on the proper display of a flag? . . .
whew -- the minutiae that consumes some people on this board is stiffling in its irrelevancy . . . before this, it was someone complaining because a store clerk wished them a "blessed day."

I think I'll go elsewhere on the web, see if there's anything worthwhile happening there. . .

8. Whoever designed that place had no taste at all.
It's a sickening mishmash of classical-esque crap. I like the old chambers better, both Statuary Hall and the original Senate. The coffering on the ceilings and the general style of the place is incredibly beautiful. Wish I could say that of the current chambers. (If I remember correctly, that carpet is no longer in there.)

22. The fasces and the "In God We Trust" quote.
I really don't care about the fasces, in Ancient Rome they were simply symbols of the authority of political offices, I'm assuming they were made and installed before the fascists hijacked the symbol. The "in God We Trust" I do have a problem with.
