What the purple fingers were really about

They thought if they voted then the American troops would leave sooner.
That motivation was left out of the corporate mainstream news, for the most part.

Few Iraqis trust U.S. forces four years into war

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Only 18 percent of Iraqis have confidence in U.S.-led forces, a new poll showed on Monday, four years after the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

With Iraq bogged down in sectarian violence that threatens to tip the country into civil war, President Bush announced a strategy shift this year and is sending some 26,000 reinforcements for a security crackdown focused on Baghdad.

2. They're catching on now.
Quite a number of Iraqis supported the overthrow of Saddam. Once he was gone, they thought we'd leave because that was our stated goal.

We didn't.

Most Iraqis supported the elections. Once they were held, they thought we'd leave because that was our stated goal.

We didn't.

Many Iraqis supported the execution of Saddam. Once he was killed, they theought we'd leave because that was our unstated goal.

We didn't.

With each betrayal of expectations we lost more supporters. They are now catching on - we have no intention of leaving. Not without the oil.
