1. Simple ignorance
Lazy tongues. Ask = Aks. Calvary is a religious term a lot of people aren't even familiar with, but a newspaper editor has no excuse. It is a major editorial faux pas. We've grown so accustomed to "Nucular," Calvary is almost cute!

15. It's the Nturae of hamun raendnig ailbity.
And it's likely connected to dyslexia in some way. As long as the first and last letters of the words are in the right order, we can read it. It's possible to spell something wrong and still read it correctly, barring any other learning disorder.

17. Probably the same reason people say "pasghetti"
Unfortunately, spell check can't differentiate proper word use WRT calvary and cavalry.

20. One of my biggest peeves!!!!
Even in the US Army's First Cavalry Division, there were soldiers, yes EVEN OFFICERS, who could not pronounce it correctly.

UGH!

Nothing worse than sitting through a 30 minute speech by a Light Colonel telling you how great the "Calvary Division" is.

I'd hide if they started breaking out the timbers and nails.

22. I didn't know they wore those hats when they crucified Jesus. Wow!
I learn something new every day. I even found out about "Pubic Inspections" from the Tri-City Herald several years ago. I called to see where I could get one of those jobs, but they couldn't give me a referral. (Sigh)

24. The name "Calvary" is recited frequently in Catholic lenten prayer services.
I used to attend such services. Sometimes, months afterward, when I would want to say the word "cavalry", the name "Calvary" would slip out because of my having recited that name in rote fashion in church.

25. Because they don't know that "cavalry" comes from the French "cavalier"
(and Italian "cavaliere") = "horseman"("cheval"= "horse"). Once one knows the word's origin, voila! No more confusion with Calvary!
