The little things you learn when you're occupying a congresscritter's office.
Edited on Tue Mar-20-07 10:13 AM by newyawker99
At 1 PM EST today, 26 patriots entered Stephen J. Lynch's (DINO-MA-09) office at 88 Falcon Pier, South Boston, MA to ask him to vote NO on the upcoming supplemental appropriation to continue the occupation of Iraq. (Twelve of those patriots were from the Veterans For Peace.)

We read names of Iraqi and American dead, sang songs, and in general made ourselves a pain in the ass to the staff. Our goal was to have a conference call with the Viceroy of South Boston to express our wishes about the continued killing of our Sons, Daughters, Mothers, Fathers, Sisters and Brothers in the occupation of Iraq.

Now ya gotta picture this: Lynch's office is in the industrial area of South Boston and is a gigantic pain in the ass to get to via cah or public transportation. (I've lived in Boston since 1973 & I've never been to this place. . . .)

Being naturally inquisitive, one of these patriots there took a look at his visitor's book. It appears this congresscritter's location was chosen with care. His visitor's book was started 6.3.2003. We counted:

  • 2003 - 20 visitors
  • 2004 - 34 visitors
  • 2005 - 10 visitors
  • 2006 - 21 visitors
  • 2007 - visitors (prior to today)

From a let-me-get-the-fuck-away-from-my-constituents viewpoint, I gotta give Stevie a "Mission Accomplished." BTW, Stephen was too busy to talk to us today, tomorrow, or whenevah.

On the plus side, his District Office Manager was so pissed off he would not shake the hand of a vet thanking him for his understanding when we left the office at 5 PM EST.

I don't think they were happy to hear we'll be back tomorrow.

16. Lynch was never "the good guy"
Lynch was never "the good guy". In the primary, two
better progressives split the vote, leaving Lynch to
emerge by default.

7. Did You Call the Globe and/or Herald?
Way to go!

I bet both papers would send a photographer, if you tip off their newsrooms.

The Metro and one other professional photographer showed up. They left after about 1/2 hour.

12. The DC Bureau of the Globe...
... would be a good end-run. Call them from a cell phone, explain what's going on, and ask if they could recommend a contact at the Globe's main offices.

The DC bureau of the Globe "gets" these stories more quickly than the Boston offices, and you're more likely to get a seasoned reporter/photographer team dispatched if the DC office calls and says, "Send someone!"

8. One more nomination
You did better than us - our critter's staff locked their door when they found out we were coming, and had two smirking clones greet us (i.e. block the entrance).

11. That's a pretty punk way for him to act. Sen. Kennedy and Kerry wouldn't even
think about insulting constituents in that way.

Lynch better not even THINK about running for senator - he has a lot to learn about being a decent human being.

21. are you referring to Obey's bill?
"When they were arguing that I should vote against the legislation that I am sponsoring, they did not know that the proposal would in fact give the House its first opportunity in the four years of this misguided war to vote on a timeline for bringing it to a close."

- per Obey himself

vote YES, not no

is it that difficult to understand? do you know how congress works? this is the only thing that has any chance of succeeding, and even this is going to be a close call. any other route for ending this mess is completely lacking in votes.

(and if that is not the bill you are referring to, my apologies)

23. Apply pressure where needed...
thanks for indicating to these types that it's time to stop pussy-footing. The baby-steps of playing politics don't mean a damn thing to the next soldier who will be blown to bits today in Iraq...or his family.
