Genius! Taking Impeachment Off The Table(fingers crossed behind back)
Edited on Fri Jan-26-07 10:03 AM by Homer12
I think I understand WHY? the democrats took impeachment off the table(?).

1) It takes it off the corporate media spotlight and took the topic of revenge and partisanship off as well. (We don't hear about it much in the corp media)

2) What they learned (yes they learn unlike rethugs), that in order to fully impeach and kick Cheney and Bush out, they NEED wide public support (not just DU support and partisans like us). Having a nationwide calling for impeachment, much like the calling for the end of Vietnam. If you remember when the Tugs tried to impeach Clinton, there was no public support and Clinton's approval rating were high. You can't impeach if the president is good in the polls, then you look partisan.

The way Cheney and Bush are, they will not back down nor resign, they will have to be carried off Kicking and Screaming. Every-time they push back with their un-popular war and domestic plans, against the Democrats and public opinion, they lose public support and even parts of their Conservative and Republican base. Remember Clinton had a strong base at the time.

Basically, the bully, political focus, inflated confidence, and arrogance that have helped Bush and Cheney so well when they had FEAR and hate on their side is now working against them do to their failure to change (for whatever real world reasons).

Here's a snippet of a press conference from an unnamed democratic congress women,s press conference in the future, "We took impeachment off the table originally because you can't take these steps if you have no evidence. Investigation's show that the Bush administration has gone against the Constitution many times. Illegal use of torture, fixing evidence for an Iraq war, and many other transgressions, which you can read in the indictment. Regarding the Iraq war, President Bush and Cheney had many opportunities to change strategy in Iraq, the American people showed their displeasure with over-whelming condemnation of the Bush Policy. We tried to change it, but they didn't listen, they didn't even listen to the binding resolution not to attack Iran - But they did anyway, trying to up the ante and get the UNited States in a larger regional war for their personal and economic reasons. This sent off a constitutional crisis and we have NO OTHER RECOURSE, but to remove George Bush and Dick Cheney from office."

1. seems to be a lot of confusion about impeachment....

Impeachment IS the indictment. It is the process of investigating cause for removal from office and accepting or rejecting the articles of impeachment that result. In other words, once impeached, the president is still in office. Impeachment is the processes of investigating and bringing charges in the House of Representatives.

4. Yes, but what about 'separate' criminal charges?
Such as crimes against humanities, the breaking of Geneva Conventions, etc. Are criminal charges considered separate or is impeachment a first step in that direction as well?

The crimes of this regime are far greater than a simple impeachment/removal would cover. If we are truly a nation of laws then they have much to answer for.

7. oh, I agree with your latter comments completely....
I do believe that impeachment would be a necessary first step, however, if only for the reason that the nation needs functioning leadership while the Bush criminals are being tried for war crimes.

2. I think they took it off the table to establish their authority over national policy.
(Or I should say, I *hope* this was their motive.) If they had come in appearing to be first and foremost about impeaching Bush, they would run the risk of losing control of the situation, just as Bush has lost control of everything he's touched by running in recklessly wherever the whim strikes him. I firmly believe impeachment will out when the time is right, and I believe the time will be ripe before Bush's "official" time is up.

3. I've said similar before here on DU
"Evidence obtained during our multiple investigations leads us to conclude that the constitutionally required option of impeachment be put back on the table. The Honorable John Conyers will head up a hearing in the House starting on Monday to determine if this evidence rises to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors."

(and, we'll immediately see the Swift Boating of Conyers begin with a fury that will make the attacks on Kerry look like a grade school prank)

5. Yeah. Sure. And cutting taxes on the rich increases revenues, too.
Going north gets us closer to the south. Dieting causes people to gain weight. And we wage war in order to seek peace. Right. Golly ... all that sewfistikated strategizing!!!

:dunce:

6. It's off the table until it's put back on the table.
Bad form to prejudge the evidence before the investigations and findings are part of the record.
