Is there a doctor in the House?
Sometimes life on Capitol Hill can be less than glamorous.
Take poor Nancy Boyda. The Kansas congresswoman threw up in front of some visiting Kansans the other day.
Hey, at least she hit a wastebasket.
Who doesn’t recall cringing at the image of President George H.W. Bush, father of the current Oval Office occupant, vomiting on the Japanese prime minister at a state dinner in Japan?
As for Boyda’s unfortunate witnesses? Just another day at the office for them. It was a group of firemen from Lawrence. Two were emergency medical technicians.
"It was incredibly fortunate to have a health moment when you have EMTs around," said Boyda Chief of Staff Shanan Guinn.
Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper, first reported the episode today. Guinn said her boss had been feeling ill for several minutes and the EMTs helped her. Boyda went straight way to a local hospital and was diagnosed with gallstones. She plans to have surgery during the Easter recess.
Guinn said the freshman Democrat is fine: "It was more embarrassing than anything else."
But something may be going around. Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt of Ohio reportedly slipped on a patch of vomit in a House ladies room last week.
Or maybe it's just true. Politics does make people sick.
