1. Saudi Arabia is Sunni
so you might want to rethink that one.

12. Wahhabism (radical Sunnis) is hardly secular.
But the political extremists (whether under the cover of Islam, Judaism. or Christianity) are symptomatic of the corruption of faith traditions by sociopathic power junkies.

IMHO, of course.

4. agree
I know alot of Sunni's and Shia's who don't match your descriptions. Really kind of crude. The radicals in any religion are not indicative of any religion.

7. The whole deal confuses the dickens out of me
That is why we have no business over there causing trouble. We need to stand back in our own country and study these people closely. I suspect we all might learn something.

11. Sunni and Shia both have progressives and ignorant fundie hater-mongers, just like any religious
tradition. Catholics range from the fascist Opus Dei to liberation theology activists. And so on. Same within Islam.

13. I would say Shia are like Catholics and Sunni like protestants...
With Sunnis you have moderates (like the mainline protestants) and fundamentalist wahabi muslims (like the evangelicals).

The Shia fall between the two. And the Ayatollah is like the Pope on steroids.

15. Um...this message is really rude
The man I am currently dating is Shiite Muslim. And he's anything but a "snake-handling fundamentalist".

Now, a REAL GWB explanation (that my fellow would no doubt laugh hilariously at) would be:

"Sunnis and Shi'a...it's like Kibbles and Bits, but different!"

16. Here's a very simple guide.
Read it carefully:

Take as long as you need.

From the DU Rules

With regard to religion (or the lack thereof), Democratic Underground is a diverse community which includes Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, Atheists, Agnostics, and others. All are welcome here. For this reason, we expect members to make an extra effort to be sensitive to different religious beliefs, and to show respect to members who hold different religious beliefs. Members are welcome to discuss whether they agree or disagree with particular religious beliefs, but they are expected to do so in a relatively sensitive and respectful manner. As a general rule, discussions about ideas are usually permitted, but broad-brush bigoted statements about groups of people — either religious or non-religious — are not. If you are easily offended by discussions about religious beliefs, or if you take pleasure from offending or ridiculing people with different beliefs, or if you consider progressive people with different beliefs to be your enemy or your inferior, do not participate in religious discussions on Democratic Underground.

Do not post "flame bait" discussion topics. While there is no clear line regarding what constitutes flame bait, the moderators have the authority to shut down threads which they consider too rhetorically hot, too divisive, too extreme, or too inflammatory. Please use good judgment when starting threads; inflammatory rhetoric does not normally lead to productive discussion.
